putiing an insurance write off back on road

anyone out there put a cat b back on the road, ive just got an immaculate bike 100% standard that only needed a headlamp and its 20yrs old so its a classic, i keep looking at it and think theres no way im going to break her as she is in mint condition totally original. so any thoghts about this, im sure its not the dvla that kick up a fuss but the insurance companys why it was classed as a cat b i'll never know.

It's not possible, well, not possible to do it any legal way anyway. It's a "take all the bits off it and put on another bike" type job is it not?

If only the headlamp was broken, why on earth did you or the previous owner tell the isnruance company about it and claim???

A £20 new light would fix it, but they'll probably try and look for a price for the original part. If it's 20 years old, it'll probably cost a bomb for an original part. Hence them writing it off.

If its Cat B then it can never go back on the road again.

Only Cat C and D can go back onto the road, even then they must pass and inspection and MOT.

Above comments are true, although occasionally people manage it (probably when the DVLA screw up). However I think the rules are different for older write offs (ie, written off a good few years ago).

Buy a frame with a V5, although there is usually a very good reason why its a cat B.

Are you sure it's a cat b? could be worth going along to a local car/bike dealer and bunging them a tenner to do a hpi. It just seems funny that there isn't more damage.

There must have been some very substantial damage at one time and it is now, as you say immaculate so someone has spent time and money repairing it. But why would anyone bother when it can't be put on the road again?

Track bike, that's what most the track bikes on eBay are; previous write-offs.

Someone's clearly done something to that in the past, the insurance companies aren't stupid, they don't want to fork out for a write off, they'd just get an after market headlight.

this bike when i got it had all vin plates numbers even the number plate fully intact, the frame etc is perfect ive laser line checked it, the only thing that i can think of is that it was an american import and that they only made them for 18mths, it has been kept with lots of love and attention by the last owner and due to it now a classic the parts can't be got in this country, all i did was change the square h/light to a round one untill some time in future ill track a original down on ebay etc.
had a talk with a mate last night and this is the legal point .
when you buy a cat b it is the insurance company only that dont want it used again even as a track bike but the dvla will issue a v5 after it has been checked out by the police obv to make sure its not a ringer etc. his now put 10 cars back on road that has been cat b and all of them have been jap 4x4 thingys

read the above but a vic test is only for cars, i cant find anything about bikes, if it comes to the push ill store the bike and maybe's in the future i might find a frame but the chances are so slim to impossible. ive been onto the vjmc club see if they can help in some way

how do you do that then i cant put a differnt plate on a bike thats ringing can just see the coppers face light up when a honda comes back as a ford mondeo

Just apply for one. If you sent the £19 their is a chance they will overlook it and process it as a normal bike. The DVLA have been known to make all sorts of clerical errors.

Mine is a cat c and it's apparantly supposed to state so on the V5 but it doesn't. I sent the £19 when i didn't need to (cat c's are free) so i assume they processed mine as a non write off.

Worth a shot. The worst they can do is return your cheque (though sometimes they will ask the police to investigate if they think something dodgy is going on).

well ive sent the v62 off and £19 so i'll sit back and wait see what happens tho knowing the dvla it'll take weeks so i'l sit it out and just keep polishing the ally etc
