Road accident figures

These are the tables of road accident figures.

Few interesting bits in there. Check table 1r which has details of insurance claims. In 2003 the claim frequency was 17.2% for comprehensively insured private cars with an average claim of £1671 , and 7.7% for non comprehensively insured private cars with an average claim of £3492. A bit of maths combining those figures gives 15.7% at a cost of £1908.

Compare that to bikes (not split comprehensive / non comprehensive) where the figure is 6.9% with an average cost of £2632.

Looks like riders claim far less often but with higher claims.

Figures include theft and the like.

I imagine a large percentage of motorcycle claims are for theft hence the higher average. I think most poeple (motorcyclists) if they have a prang, tend to the repair themselves.

Think you are right on that. Surprised how low the averages are really, as I would suspect most people would avoid claiming (because of no claims bonus issues, etc) at levels remarkably close to that.

Insurers still bugger me for my insurance 'till £50 notes stop flying out my mouth. The owners of bike insurance companies must wipe their arses and light cigars with £50s(hopefully with the same note). Filthy rich b4stards! More should be done to regulate insurers.

Wasn't it in MCN recently that insurance companies too readily right off bikes (possible due to the high spares costs) and this puts up the costs to the rest of us.

P.S. I know MCN gets slagged off here, but occasionally it might be right and do a bit of journalism.
