Honda Cg front break squeal

My Honda cg 2002 model front drum brake, is making a sqeal when the brake is pressed lightly. When under heavy braking no problem. Brakes function ok and the pads indicatir shows plenty left,

Tends to happen when its wet more? is this normal or just a trait of drum brakes?

Just a trait mate you can take the shoes out and file down the leading edge but it won't last.

It is only a ten minute job to whip the wheel off and have a quick look. While you are in there, put a thin smear of copper grease on the pivots and springs (basically anywhere where metal can touch metal, being sure none can get on the pads). Also have a look at the brake drum itself, clean off any corrosion with some wire wool or emery paper.

That said, drum brakes can and do squeal when they get damp but having a look in there gives peace of mind. Set for the winter then and confident everything is greased up and protected.

Did the brakes on my mates H100 (exactly the same as on a CG) last weekend (that bike spent three days under water in the Carlisle floods earlier this year and this is the first time we checked the brakes prior to the MOT). Gave the whole lot a big squirt over with aerosol brake cleaner, a wipe off with a rag then greased all the pivots. Looks like brand new now.

Get some sandpaper and rub the glaze off the brake shoe linings. That should sort it, at least for six months or so.
