Hi all,

Need some help with what seems to be a tiny oil leak I have somewhere. Basically the other day after a long journey I noticed I had some small splatters of oil on my frame (on the right hand side) and on closer inspection, there was also small amounts of oil on the spark plug cap, the inside of the fairing, and on top of the engine. Do you think this could be something to do with the valve cover? I see that there is a rubber between the valve cover and the engine and I wonder if it is leaking from here possibly. It only seems to be on the right hand side of the engine (as sitting on the bike).

Cheers.

p.s forgot to say, the bike is a GS500.

Had a similar problem recently and the hardest part is finding the source. Degrease all of the engine where there is evidence of oil. put the bike on its center stand if it has one then start it up and rev it. You probably need to do this for a few minutes. Now look all over the engine to see if there is any evidence. I ended up using chalk dust to find mine but it worked.

You could try torqueing the valve cover down. On the GSX there are two large looking bolts on the side of the valve cover that can come loose, this is where my first leak came from and it would cover the engine in oil on a 20 mile run but only needed a tweak to stop the leak.

Hire a well used classic Royal Enfield for a week, then go back. This will cure you of worrying about oil leaks Laughing

Well that was an easy fix! You were right marki, one of the valve bolts was totally loose, I could unscrew it with my fingers. Gave it a good tighten, degreased the engine, revved it up for a while and clean as a whistle Smile

Cheers.
