Ok Guys, sorry for my ignorance here and i hope i don't anoyy to many of you for asking silly questions.

Ok im 20 and only have a provisional lisence, i have been working towards my car test but have alwasy been interested in a bike, just thought it was out of my price range, but after looking into the bike schene, it seems like everyone is friendly and isnt as much as i first thought.

Now i know this is probably jumping ship abit, but im really not into these moped 50cc business !

found a bike that has grabbed my attention and thats the Kawasaki ZXR400.

Now whats the laws about this restriction business , if i was todo the CBT and restrict it at the age of 20 !

I dunno if thats something you bike guys disagree with or what, im not exactly a SMALL person ! So need something like that, that suits me.. size of bike etc ! and the style Smile !

Any help or advice guys?

Cheerz
matt

That would be completely illegal.

You need to do your full motorcycle licence to ride a motorcycle bigger than 125cc in capacity.

If you did your CBT then you could ride a 125 on 'L' plates.

When you do your full motorcycle license, if you are under 21 then you must do a category A restricted license which allows you to ride a bike up to 33bhp.

The ZXR400 makes 60bhp, and so must be restricted to 33bhp to be legally ridden on a full motorcycle license (Cat A restricted).

If you wait until you are 21 you can do a DAS (Direct Access) course in which case you must pass your test on a 500cc twin that makes about 50bhp. (after training with a qualified instructor). If you pass you get your full Category A license with no restriction.

HTH. Smile

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

to get a zxr400 or anything bigger than a 125cc bike you need have a proper license. how long till you are 21? then do your DAS (direct access) and no need with restrictions Thumbs Up

if its a while away you can do the A2 test, this restricts you to 33 BHP for 2 years

you will still need to complete a CBT i believe for which ever one you choose.

How long 'till you are 21?

If it isn't long, I'd buy a cheap 125 and do my CBT. Ride the 125 on L-plates until you are 21 then do your full test to get an unrestricted licence.

If you do your test at 20, you will be restricted to 33bhp until you are 23 unless you do a second test once you turn 21.

Or like most people, do your test and ignore the 33hp thing.

As other people have asked - I too was going to ask how long before you're 21. I did the DAS course in June this year - which consisted on two full days training, then the test on the third day. I passed, then went straight to a TT600 (see the link in my sig for piccies). There's nothing wrong with missing the "small bike" phase. The way I saw it - I didn't want a small bike and I could afford a big bike - so why ride around on a shitty little thing when I didn't need to. The TT600 is my first bike, so obviously I had to take it easy at the start. This wasn't a problem though - I've never felt that I couldn't handle the bike (even on my first day of riding it).

HTH,
Dan.

Well, personally,
I like to know where I stand with a machine. I don't want anything that has more power than I can grip in the palm of my hand. In my country, even though we don't have any kind of restrictions on bikes once you get your license, I am still thinking of getting a Cagiva Planet 125cc for my first bike. I feel I want to be able to squeeze all I can out of a bike of that size so that once I move on to larger bikes -God willing- I will have the ability and control to really take command of the bike. I don't want my ride to be just a hang-on-for-your-life thing or worse: too afraid to gas it.

IMHO Smile
