On my daily journey home from the humdrum of work, i was enjoying skipping through the traffic on my aprilia habana retro. I stopped at the traffic lights only to hear a funny noise coming from the scooter, like a raging mad cricket! I pulled over and took my helmet off to have a better listen. The noise was/is quite loud and ticks with the rev of the engine. The scooter doesn't feel any different and i got the cover off when i got home but i can't see anything. The noise is coming from the general engine area but i don't know much about the workings.... if anyone has an idea what it could be, or anything i can do to find out where it is coming from, it'd be a great help.

I had a feel about for anything loose, appears that everything is tightened in place. I had it serviced and then mot'd only 3 weeks ago, bugger's must have loosened something to get me back in!!!

Evil or Very Mad

Damn it, i'll go back tomorrow and i'll post up what the problem is. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix.

could be pinking. If the ignition timing's out it could be igniting too early, causing a shockwave at TBC. the "chirp" is the ping of the resonant frequency engine components stressing a bit under the load.

It's a 2-stroke. I took the scoot to the garage this morning and the guy had a listen. He thinks it's something to do with the transmission? He couldn't look at it properly today so i've got to drop it off tomorrow morning. I drove it to and from work and the bike was fine even though the noise is still happening. So i'll know more in a couple of days after they've stripped it and fiddled with it's internals.

A guy a work who re-builds old vespa's said it could be the automatic gear unit or possibly the belt is ready to go.

We shall see....

Well it's taken 3 days for them (the mechanics) to get around to having a look at my scooter. Turns out the noise is caused by the fan being completely fucked, the blades are bent (don't know how?) Sad to add to my misery the cog that the kick-start is part of is done in also. So £200+ to sort it out, got to phone tomorrow to see if they have done the work and i can pick it up. Gutted because i'm skint but i hate public transport in London so it's worth every penny!

Thanks for your help and suggestions, if anybody has any idea why the fan would be knackered i'd like to hear them.

Cheers!

Thumbs Up

Here we go again... after finding out the above was wrong with the bike yesterday, i phoned the garage today to find out if they had done the work and if I could pick it up today.

Confused

"Aha", the mechanic says... actually we haven't looked at your bike yet, that was a different scooter we were talking about yesterday, i'm just getting the cover off it now to see what the problem is, what did you say was wrong with it?

Confused

Doh!

So i've just had a phone call and the mechanic has told me it's actually a gear cog that has worked it's way loose with the vibration of the engine, so noise problem found and fixed, funnily enough though, he started asking me if i'd ever used the kick-start, 'nope', only had it 4 weeks and you guys serviced it. Well it appears that there is a cog missing in the kick-start workings. I gather kick-start's are abused?

He didn't say anything about fixing that, just hope on those cold winter mornings when my electric starter packs in i'm not left having to get the bus Crying or Very sad

But hey, i'm going to pick it up later on Very Happy

Crying or Very sad

well, £100 quid lighter and nothing has been fixed. on the way home from the garage the noise starts. I told the eejits that it takes about 5-10mins for it to start. Used it today to and fro work, no change, still sounds like i've got an angry cricket jumping about inside the body.

So guess this means being without the wheels for another week.

Has anybody had dealings with a garage where they haven't fixed the problem. Am i entitled to say i'm not paying for them to look at it again and fix it this time?

The bit i think your on about can be taken out from the workings, so stopping the noise.

If you remove the large casing on the engine, youll see a half moon shaped part which should be connected to another part, which when the kickstart is kicked, engages with the other part on the crank. So if you remove it, it should stop the noise Thumbs Up

Id really need a closer look at whats inside it to see what i thinks the problem
