Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a CBR600 once I (hopefully!!) get through my DAS course in a couple of weeks. Now there are a number of versions of it but I am torn between the 'normal' CBR600F and the Sport versions from around 2001 or 2002 and I'm interested in peoples views on the two. I cant seem to find any online comparisons of them and any reviews seem to lump them together. So apart from the fuel injection, lighter alloy frame and racing seat setup Wink is the Sport worth shelling out that bit of extra cash?

I've setup a poll to polarise opinions and any help much appreciated!! Very Happy Very Happy

hi, ive got a 2002 cbr600 and its not much different from the sport model: both have same frames, engines and fuel injection etc. only differences are cosmetics really.

Cheers guys for the info, I shall have a meander over to the CBR forum.

I see the poll is 2-1 in favour of the normal F, interesting. Very Happy

The differences between the F and the F Sport of the same year aren't terribly significant.

The most noticable, apart from the looks, is that the Sport has one extra tooth on the rear sprocket as standard. Making it feel marginally 'sportier'.

Of course, you can change the sprockets on either bike to be whatever you like.

The sport has a slightly different clutch (slightly more heavy duty) and may be set up stiffer as standard (you'd think, though I've never found conclusive info on that).

So in essence, it's really just looks. Everything else you could easily tweak on the F to make it the same or better than the Sport.

Oh yeah, and the F has a centre stand fitted as standard while the Sport doesn't.

Always forget that cos I took mine off when I downgeared it.

Cheers Bendy for the info Thumbs Up , so there is not much of a difference between the two.

Guess I will have to try the seating position on both and see what I like.....

it depends what you want it for- if u want it for posing, get the Sport as it looks very slightly better. If you want a comfy seat that is good for long journeys with good storage space and just as quick/good handling etc, get the cbr600f.

To be honest, its only going to be a plaything. I live walking distance away from work and I have a car (5th Gen Honda Prelude Very Happy ) so its only going to be used for enjoyment purposes only. It will have a couple of 360mile round trips a year when I go down to see the friends and family. Although I wouldn't mind a run into continental Europe as its something I've never done with the car.

My old dad has a 1998 CBR600F (along with a Vincent) and loves the thing, often pops over to Ireland on it. Seems that that is the popular choice.

id suggest passing your test first and then trying out a few bikes and see what you like best. Getting test rides is not as difficult as some people seem to think and its better than just reading about something although that does help.

I'm just narrowing down my list so its less than the 25-odd bikes you had!!

Only joking Colin! Razz

Perversely, the Sport has more underseat space than the F. That 'sporty' tail design makes for a big boot.

you need to test ride them both if poss and weigh up what you want out of a bike.

i've ridden both and whilst i do like the sport and am considering a blue and white one (not red and black Thumbs Down ) as my next bike.

i love my f for its comfort and the fact i am so used to it now, its my first bike and will always be special to me and i still have loads more to learn on it.

i found the f sport to be a bit smarter looking, a bit taller and rock hard to sit on compared to mine Wink

the only other thing i noticed when doing a tight turn around in a carpark is that the lock is not as good on the f and i got my fingers caught between the bike near the tank and the bars but i think that would be something just to get used to.

in my opinion the f is a perfect first bike and very forgiving compared to some of the more focussed bikes out there

I must thank everybody for their views on this. The result is now a bit academic as I am being given a CBR600F!! My parents had come up to Edinburgh to see me today and I got talking about bikes with the old fella. He mentioned that his CBR was sat around doing nothing so I said jokingly "can I borrow it then?" to which he replied "Well I'm not using it so you may as well have it". Shocked

Gobsmacked is not the word!! A free CBR6!! Its a '97 R (not 98 as I thought) but only has 5k miles on it and in the dark grey/yellow striped colour scheme.

Just hope I pass my Das ok in two weeks time.
