Hi guys,

My battery on my CG125 dies if I don't rev the engine! What could be up? If I leave neutral on and the keys in when the engine is off, it takes about 2 minutes for the neutral lamp to die down Sad

how old is your battery? It sounds to me like you need to buy a new one immediately. As the old one is now f***d. Charging it up on a charger will not fix it now because if it is a drained as much as that then it is ruined and will never hold it's charge.

When you rev the engine does the headlight get slightly brighter?

1) If it does the charging circuit is ok and you just need a new battery.

2) If it doesn't you might have a problem with charging and you will need a new battery.

Yes it gets brighter... Do you think it needs topping up with distilled water?

If its not at the propper electrolite level (and mixture eventually) it wont hold its full charge.. give it a check that all of the cells are topped up propperly, be carefull to check the breather pipe is free of obstruction!

Take the negative terminal off first when you do, this will lessen the chance of sparks, make sure to take the battery is off and away from the bike, if it overcharges for any reason you dont want it on the bike!

Sounds like a buggerd battery, but try chargeing it, start the bike and see if it does it again, batterys should last 3/4 years, yours could well be the original so dont worry too much..

Yes batteries will last 3/4 years but not if they have been allowed to discharge below 10v if a 12v battery and 5v if a 6v battery. If they have been flattened right down, they are a waste of time and will just loose their charge all the time because the lead will have an oxidised coating which can't be repaired.

If the acid has mostly boiled off or leaked out, topping it up with distilled water will do nothing apart from make the weight heavier. The water is only there to sit on top of the acid to stop it evaporating, if it has already evaporated and some of the acid has gone too it's too late.

As the dark nights and winter come along it is essential that you have a strong keen and totally charged battery.

Do bikes have an idle speed control valve like on cars.

I know when my car needed revs or it would stall, it wasn't battery/alternator but the idle speed valve.

Don't listen to me, I know more about cars than bikes, even though I love bikes more.

What effect will it have on my bike? Will it affect the engine running? cos it's been running a bit pants recently and was wondering whether that could be the cause?

Yes all bikes have an idle speed adjuster. Usually it is accessible. On my SV for instance it is a little knob which sticks out the side which you can adjust with your fingers.

I have a feeling that most 4 stroke engines need a battery connected to their electical circuits for a ballast on the load, if you take the battery off the engine won't work because you won't generate a spark. You can however get a large ballast resisitor to replace your battery if you want to get rid of it.

In conclusion I would say that it is unlikely that your battery has all that much effect on your engine unless some of it's cells are a dead short and it is down to about 3v, but I have never had it myself someone else may have a better idea.
