Instead of getting a £2000 sports 600, i am thinking of getting a £1000 rs250 and spending the rest on an off road bike

this is ealy stages yet and i might not do it

i'll probably have a go on the offroad bikes at the nec but obviously I wont get to do any jumping

knowing nothing about it, I would guess that a 250 2t motocross wd be fine with landing from 6ft

but how would 125 2t's and 400 4t's be at this sort of thing

will standard suspension be ok for this sort of thing, or is it only some bikes which are comfortable landing after going 6 ft up in the air

wd something like this be ok
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4581471314&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

i enjoyed jumps on my bmx so a dirtbike might be fun

*cough* off roading section *cough*

Perhaps take a look at a honda cr125. Might be a little too quick to begin with though...although what do I know.

How much air you can get is limited by the style of bike and suspension, rather than capacity.

Competition motorcross bikes like the CR125, CR250, CRF450 (obviously each make has their own ones) will all have decent suspension and design to soak up big jumps.

Enduro style bikes, in Honda's case, XR250, crm250, XR400 and xr650 will still be able to handle some jumps, but don't expect them to cope once you start to get big.

More road biased stuff will probably be even worse.

At the moment I'm drooling over a KTM300exc, which is an enduro 2 stroke, but is supposed to have good enough suspension to keep up on a mx track.
Probably way too much to me as I've only been off road four times or so though and it seems to be thought of as faster than their 525 4stroke enduro!

Remember, competition bikes are going to need a lot of maintenance and won't be well suited to road use - so limiting you to local places to ride probably.

Firstly, that XR350 would fall apart first jump Laughing

Secondly, bet you a fiver you couldn't safely jump 6ft anyway! Unless you've ridden MX or something before...

TBH if you have no off roading experiance i'd be very impressed if you could manage a 4 foot jump, 6 foot you'd have to be experianced or nutty.

I'd go for something like a yz125 or a cr125, they are plenty fast enough for a n00b off road.

Reckon I got 6 foot off the ground first time I did half-proper offroading - on a single narrow jump addmitadely.

Didn't crash doing that, though I did land front wheel first a few times Embarassed.

Have got 'reasonable' experience riding bikes in general though.

im not planning to do a 6ft jump on first ride

that is about as high as i would ever go (after several months) and im unlikely to ever go that high but its good to know the bike can handle more than me

I have done a little ultra light offroad on my rs125 on dry smooth tracks in woods which was pleasant

is the dt125, as close as i am gonna get to a road legal cr125 or yz125 ?

how hard would it be to make cr125 or yz125 road legal to ride it to the woods ?

would the dt125 be comfy doing a 6ft jump or would it be damaged ?

6ft?? Evil knievel jumped harleys 4 times higher than that, so you might like to tell people who you're going to be like Wink Wink Wink.

Anything enduro will handle 6ft easily and will be road legal. Get 125/200/250 max, anything bigger and you'll be a passenger on it and you'll learn little.

If you want to find out about serious air search under supercross.

Maybe before you shell out for a bike you should go for a rider experience day, you can go and ride enduro of MX bikes, I know Honda and Yamaha do them, I think KTM, Husky and CCM do as well. Might give you a feel for more hardcore off road kit.

Couldn't you MOT a crosser like that under the daytime MOT ruling? It doesn't have to have lights or indicators but I doubt this is a problem as you probably won't wan't to ride off road much at night anyway.

just a thought.

thats the kind of question i was asking you guys as i hvnt a clue if a cr125 can be made road legal by just asking for a daytime mot. to offroad bikes come with v5 and registration ? would i need to get the bike road registered before i try to get an mot ?

From what I've been told, a motocross bike won't do green laning etc so well.
It would be like getting a Honda RS125 and going to the shops on it!

Definitely won't be designed for doing distance.
So you might want to consider what you've got near by, if that's going to be your only form of transport.

I did always want to do a mx experience day, until I took Korn's (and my supermoto DR) out around a home made track a bit.
First 20 minutes I hated it and it just didn't feel right, preserved and rather enjoy it all now.
Cost a lot less than a proper experience day and probably got more riding in as well!

my main transport is yp250 scooter
i have my rs125 for country lane blasts and might go to a tt600 or rs250
but it might be nice to have something for blasts around the disuesed clay pit near my house and some woods not far away, and the old limestone workings have some nice steep offroad bits about 1 mile away

By transport I'm talking getting your off road bike to places where you can ride it.

If you're talking about getting a highly strung mx bike where there's no mx tracks within 50 miles there seems little point as not only will it take you ages to get there and back but your bike will have probably blown up in the process.

I wdnt be taking it 50 miles to some place, more like 3 or maybe 6 at the most.

i might just get a midi moto 110cc thing and a car to cart it off to places with.

the girlfriend would love it if i got a car.
