Evil or Very Mad as some of you may know, my clutch cable snapped a while ago, and i left my bike into the local dealership [the only people i know who will even touch kymco] and had them replace the cable for an extortionate amount of money!

The dealership also said that my bike was low on oil, so they put some in for me.

Then, after picking the bike up, i went for a spin and my bike dies down some country lane! When i pulled over, i noticed that the bike was pissing oil out, i asumed that this was due to picking up a crack comewhere from a flying stone etc.

Now having dismantled the bike, and investigated, i see that where the oil was coming out was actually an overflow, and on futher inspection, the oil gauge reads at the high mark.

Since the engin is cold, and since ive left about 2 pints of oil in a persons driveway, i can only conclude that the dealership overfilled my bike with oil! as far as i know, this could have lead to a blown gasket etc!

for some reason, the oil overflow is into the air filter,,?? so i presume the air filter got covered in oil, and the carb sucked oil in and thats why she died?

well the short of it is my bike still wont kick start, im gettin the car battery soon and trying to jump her [bike battery is dead] and hopefully it will start.

Not 100% sure on your bike but the pipe into the air filter is usually an engine breather tube. Oil vapour that comes up the pipe is sucked into the carb and burnt by the engine. If loads of oil is pumped up then the chances are the carbs may gunk up and the plugs are dirty.

I know nothing about your bike but...

I would definately check the plug first, nice and simple and might be the answer to not starting.

Actually I would make sure the oil is at the right level. There is usually a bolt near to the filler plug that you can take out which will drain out any excess oil when the bike is level. clean out the air box and just take a look at the filter, should be obvious if its no good.

At worst the oil could be being pushed through the breather because the cylinder is worn or a piston ring is broken, compression pressure will leak past the rings and pressurise the crankcase. Easy to check with a compression tester.

Stop working on it and phone the dealer and ask them to fix it as they are in the wrong and they now need to repair any damage they caused to the bike. That is why they charge you for the service, no? I mean otherwise you would of done it yourself so ring them up.

it will be a hard job to prove that it was them who overfilled the oil level, they could just say that i did it, and its my fault.

I've got two different sizes in my socket set and neither of them fit. Mine was a 12mm and Halfords sell them.

well i didnt know that it was just the clutch cable, i thatugh that the gearbix was fcuked because i couldnt disengauge the clutch by hand, so i left it in. its a small dealership here in N.Ireland, and everybody i know who has used it, knows not to use it again so theres no advantage in naming them. The only reason i go there is because they are the only people here who work with kymcos.

Yes, with the spark plug out, rest it on the engine case (with the ht lead attached) then turn the bike over and watch for a spark.

Dont hold it while you do this though.

Even if the plug sparks though it doesn't mean the plug is good, it may just be producing a weak spark which under pressure is failing.

Dealerships are worse and worse these days, especially with foreign brands like Kymco. We stopped taking our old Daewoo to the dealer because they were total cowboys, and overcharged. Take it to a local mechanic who you know knows his stuff, chances are if you build a relationship you will get better service. Maybe tip them the first few times and stuff.

i can agree with that, i bought my kymco second hand...i was the second owner and it was only 6 months old when i got it last september. the kymco dealer here has recentley gone out of business and if their service departments attitude was anything to go by then i can understand why Sad

spark plug is fine, good spark from it, carberatur is out, and turns out it was clean,,,,,,,,and i cleaned the air filter and still it wont start. Im worried now.

Roughly how much compression should there be in a 125 cylinder? thers about enough for me to feel, but not enough to push air past my finger or anything.

you shouldnt sand a spark plug as you will scrape off little flecks of metal which can then sit on the insualtion and interfere with proper sparking

you need a brass wire brush. brass is softer than steel so wont scratch your plug but harder than carbon, so will scratch off the carbon deposits

you can probably get one on ebay if you dont know a shop that sells them

Try it again and make sure you are actually getting to the compression stroke.

If it's electric start you should easily get enough pressure to push your finger or thumb off.

If it's kick start, you'll need to have it on the compression stroke so might take a few tries to get compression.

Put the plug back in and try to start it again, then check the plug again to see if it is 'wet' - that is - that it has petrol on it.

If it isn't 'wet' and the engine spins over fast, you've got a fuel problem.

Try that first and we'll go from there Wink
