Here's one for the legal eagles, what's the legal angle when it comes to filtering on clogged motorways and city centers, has anyone been done for it Question

I refer you to rule 71 of the Highway Code in the section "Rules for Motorcyclists" which reads as follows:

71: Manoeuvring. You should be aware of what is behind and to the sides before manoeuvring. Look behind you; use mirrors if they are fitted. When overtaking traffic queues look out for pedestrians crossing between vehicles and vehicles emerging from junctions.

A number of important points arise from this rule.

1. Note the use of the word WHEN as emphasised in the rule. It does not say "Do not overtake traffic queues" (or words to that effect), or suggest that it is an inappropriate course of action to take. It is clearly not a prohibitive instruction (see for example rule 74 which give prohibitive instructions). This clearly envisages that motorcyclists may, in the normal course of riding, overtake traffic queues.

That's put that one to bed then.
Oh, what the fuck would a pedestrian be doing on the motorway, got no will to live then.
At what speed does filtering become undertaking, is it legal at 95mph Laughing

i was filtering along a main road (past slow moving traffic) - me traveling at 30 MPH,hit a car coming out of a junction... at the moment it is 75%/25% in my favour.. as it's patially my fault for using the road Shocked

I must admit I have filtered through motorway traffic that was moving 60+. I really needed a pee!

Used to filter at 70+ along the A14 back before I got I got my licence. Now I look back at it, I was a twat and should have been hit off on numerous occasions some of the stupid things I did eg. Going between two trucks on a dual carriageway over the Orwell Bridge on a windy day. What an idiot.

Amazing what crashing does to ones ideas of what's sensible and not.

Filter if its safe to do so, and I usually drop down to 2nd, rev it harder so people can hear you coming, clutch and brake with 3 fingers over at all times, thumb on horn. IMO stopped traffic is more dangerous than rolling traffic. Stopped traffic means doors might open which can put a serious damper on your day.

When someone drove straight through the back of me on the Euston Road, my insurance broker, underwriter, and injury solicitor all asked exactly the same question: Was I in command of my lane?

As I was at a standstill in the bl**dy middle of it, I reckoned that counted as being 'in command' of my lane. Mind you, it opened my eyes to the attitude of insurers to motorbikes overtaking/filtering.
