Some seem to like them.

From what I've seen you can get an sv650 for similar money and is generally considered to be a better perfoming bike.
(Not so good for tarting about on though.)

I always liked the look of them as well, I was surprised when I found out how gutless they are. I think they handle really nicely, certainly look nice and sound nice but not fast!

maybe one of the larger engine models would be a nice buy?

A friend of mine upgraded her GSXR400 to a monster 600. She loved it for the first month then found it to be impractical and expensive to run in comparison to the Gixxer.

She also found the Monster quite heavy and cumbersome in traffic, and has since sold it to buy another GSXR.

I think klause has one.

General view is that SV650 is a better bike for the money, but a monster 600 says ducati on the tank.

Monster is higher geared and has a heavier clutch. Probably has better suspension though. SV makes a bit more power.

Monster 600 puts out around 55bhp. I commute into London with it every Thursday and Friday does the job just fine. Think of it as a tarted up CB500 or GS500.

If your worried about performance get the M750 not much bhp difference but a lot more torque Twisted Evil .

Oh, the most I've pushed it up to was 115-120. But I mainly cruise round everywhere at 80mph. It's designed to be a street muscle bike nothing else really. I wish I went for the m750, you get another disk and more performance, but im still a making my way up the cc's, trying to be sensible about it (50cc-125cc-250cc-600cc-???cc).

If you stand them side by side, the ducati looks by far the nicer bike, even if it'll be a few years older. Sure the Sv is better on paper, but it's not about that. The Ducati has soul.

Cracking little bikes imo, a great well-proven engine too.

Depends if you describe soul as looks or the way it rides Smile.
(Unless of course if you describe 'soul' as a bike's failings.)

The sv650 came out around 1999, the monster came out in 1992 and the engine way before that aswell. So it's hardly fair to compare it to the sv650.

"One of the most copied motorcycles of all time, the Monster immediately spawned legions of imitators – but imitation is, after all, is the highest form of flattery."

So now if I grab the latest monster, the s4r it would wipe it's arse all over the sv using the 916 engine.

Of course and grab a SV1000 and spend the price difference on dealer fitted aftermarket parts and you'll have a bike that'll easily 'beat' the ducati.

Believe the RRP of the duke is £8300 and the big SV £6100 - so that's over a third of the suzuki's price again!
Not sure about discounts on the duke, but know that quite a bit is knocked off the Suzuki usually.

I was considering monster vs SV at the same price bracket, ie the sort of bike you could get for say £1500.
For my mind, that's the only really fair way to compare bikes at this sort of level.

And, err, there's the SV that imitated it kinda. Not sure what else did - there's the TRX, but that's a SS copy.

If I sort out my £1800 SV for road use, you should give it a go sometime - though admittadely not a greatly fair comparison as I will have to do a bit of work for road use.

As you said, Middle Finger ... Wink Razz.

I was comparing it to the Sv because Robby had mentioned it earlier in his post.

I guess I refer to a bike's soul as the way it makes you feel, as aposed to reliabilty, performance, style. For me, it inspires.

All good Thumbs Up

Cheaper isn't always better. I don't really like the sv's. They look poo. The moster is quite cool apart from the fact it looks a bit like a gilera dna. Laughing

Performance is what changes the way a bike makes me feel - how it behaves when it's on the road.

What badge it's got on it, what colour or what qudos when parked outside the local coffee shop matter 'nowt to me as I'm looking at the road and

I do appreciate that some people 'feel' a lot better just because they own something with some associated qudos - as can be seen by the number of Harley owning bank managers.
Fair enough I suppose, would be nice if I could get enjoment stuff on the basis of appearance rather than performance.

Cheaper may not be better, but cheaper means you can afford to buy a better one that costs the same Wink.

Personally I don't think the SV looks good either, but I don't think that would justify buying a ducati which many would consider a 'poser' bike - not a great image to have either.

I thought RRP on a new SV was like £4,500.

I think it shows when its that price brand new.

Sucker? Because I want to spend my money as efficiently as possible? Or because I don't worship a big red badge? Wink Razz
I can actually occasionally be seen recommending non-Jap brands, in fact I'm hoping my next bike is going to be a European bike because in the category I'm looking at they perform better than the jap bikes.
Not going to avoid jap bikes just because they're 'common' or other similar reason.

Hey, if I was actually rich, I would, I'm sure, choose bikes that cost loads of money because they had a certain name stuck on the side or similar reasons.

As I'm not, whatever wave might think, I want to get the maximum fun/use from my bike for the money.

I'm sure you could get the your 'maxium fun' from a ducati monster though, maybe not the 600 but the m750-m1000 you can get them cheap aswell. One of the world stunt champions uses the ducati monster.

You just seem to be in some world where because one bike has a few bhp more that another bike sucks. You keep going on about prices, when I was looking to buy, all the sv650's that go for below £1500 are normally high mileage ones or not looked after.

come on though, he's right...

if you look at it objectively the sv is a better bike for the money. Fair enough if you want the ducati badge, or you 'feel' like its better, or you prefer the looks, then buy one. But it doesnt change the facts.

Personally I can't see myself ever buying a ducati, the image isnt for me.

I love the Monster. Was very tempted by the S4R but the problem is that red badge!

If biking was just a weekend hobby I would have no hesitation in buying a Ducatti, I don't think anyone can deny that they are all great bikes, but with the badge comes a hefty price to pay, not only in purchasing/insurance costs but also the running costs. I know many people will also cry me down for the next thing I'm going to say.... but all of my friends that have Ducatti's have had no end of problems with them. They aren't a very practical everyday bike. I know there are people that do the daily commute on them but I think you are wiser spending your money elsewhere.

Great bikes, but for hobby and track riding only!

Buy a Speed Triple, has the look of a monster but a much better bike! Thumbs Up
