Yes, that would me being afflicted with a bout of eejititis. I braked too hard with the front approaching a speed bump and it slid out from me on the slimey surface. I don't think it was wet leaves or anything, it was me not paying attention as I'd just turned onto the road my house is on. Doh! I had a bad feeling that something was going to happen to me though, as soon as I encountered the closed A38.

Five hours of labour later and the bike is in perfectly rideable condition again - bent the footpeg back straight, bent and twisted the headlamp bracket back into shape, fabricated a spacer to take up the new play in the indicator mount, untwisted the forks, and rearranged the switch gear. All fixed with a socket set, a 2 lb lump hammer and a couple of mole grips. Laughing The spacer was made from an old door lock. Thumbs Up Smile

As for me, it's all just bruises and grazes, a pulled muscle in my shoulder and a crushed toenail which will shortly be parting company with my toe (it hurts a little Shocked). The Heine Gericke Devon pants come out trumps again: not a scratch on them. My gloves and my textile jacket got a bit scuffed, but they did a good job, other than the useless elbow armour.

It certainly is the season for it, take care out there and don't brake too hard. I didn't even jab at them, just applied too much pressure and couldn't recover the slide once it had started. Take care out there. Thumbs Up

You should speed up for speed bumps. Unloads the front suspension.

If you're going to run anything over, you want to do it with as much suspension travel available as possible. So technically, you should be accellerating at the point you hit it. Same goes for any debris you encounter in the road - brake before it by all means, but the moment you hit it you want the front to be uncompressed.

I just ride over them, usually stand up a bit cos it's comfier.

It was my braking before it which brought me down. I could tell exactly what was going to happen once the front started sliding, but by then I couldn't do much but try and kick the ground away. Laughing

I normally do brake and then accelerate over a speed bump, just wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been. I know better than to brake too hard in the wet, but did anyway. Embarassed I'm going to be stiff as a board and aching tomorrow; I think that's my bodies way of telling me I'm stupid. Smile

Beat me too it. But i totally agree, you can get some pretty decent air off a speed hump.

The orange flat faced, paved stone ones are the best. Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Speed bumps are a pointless, not only do they cause extra tyre, brake and shock wear, as well as electrical problems (due to increased vibrations), they also slow emergency vehicles down, affecting the response times quite dramatically. For the latter of the reasons, there is normally a route into/ out of most estates which is speedbump free, or only has a few on it.

You need to be carefull around speed bumps as causing a car/van/truck to bounce up and down means they can drip oil, diesel etc. The road before and after them can therefore be greasy, especially when wet.

Speed bumps laid down now tend to be a half bump in the road that is too wide for a car yet allows an ambulance sized vehicle to go over. You rarely see the old style ones now that span the entire length of the road, although they are far more effective.

Yeh unless you've got a Smart car you can pretty much avoid them in a normal car.

So if you brake and then accelerate over a speed bump, should you brake when your front wheel is over? Smile

Ouch, another Loughboro uni lad bites the dust Doh!. Least you and your bike are OK Ferg. It seems to be the season for unexplained crashing. So take care of your tyres and always them up sufficiently. And wherever possible, take the dry line.

How so? You just loosen the clamps and bump it into the wall a few times. I have done it many times.

As to the speedbumps, dab the brakes on the approach to it then give it a handful as you hit it. This means the suspension is rebounding as you go over the jump and kicks the front end in the air.

Do the reverse on a C90 because they have leading link suspension , dabbing the brakes makes the front end lift.

Mind you, I was disappointed with my MZ supermoto when I had it. You could hit those evil rubber speedbumps at over 60mph and the front end still wouldn't lift, just gently dunted over them Sad

I do love those midget ones...

Big wheelies down the middle of them Twisted Evil

But yeh all i do if i have to go over one is droop the revs a tad, maybe a slight squeeze to get to about 20-30 ish, then blip the throttle in a slight jockey stance.

Wouldnt mind doing a few on a proper crosser Twisted Evil

And once you get on a bigger bike im loathe to clutch up from speed bumps, cos its less predictable. Loved doing it on the goose though. Only way to get it to wheelie Laughing
