I travel daily on the North Circular Road in London. On the western section between Gunnesbury Avenue and Ealing Common, the Highways Agency have 'improved' the road by installing a cycle lane (at least I think that is what it is) - broken white lines about 4 feet from the kerb on the eastbound carriageway only - and installed another traffic island. The net result is that one of London's major arterial routes is now narrower then your average suburban street. The road is constantly clogged with traffic - so filtering is the only way to make progress except that as a result of this narrowing it is now an extremely dangerous exercise (rather than just dangerous).

Two points - are the lines really cycle lanes? Secondly I want to fire off a complaint - does anyone have any contacts in The Highways Agency?

Hate it when they do that.

Cycle lanes are a good idea, but they should be built in addition to the exisiting roads. (or just split the pavement like they do on the continenet)
Putting the lanes on the road just seems dangerous to me, as vehicles either ignore them completely and straddle the cycle lane or just veer into it occasionally.

Thats the highways agency for you! They have started compressing gravel into the road surface outside schools here in StHelens, which really does suck as there are no warning signs before you turn onto the road, so you get a nice suprise mid-corner. Madness...

come and spend a week in sheffield riding,, the only things that are flat round here are the sodding speed humps, we dont need to do wheelies to bugger up our fork seals,
thats enough to stop you worrying about how wide the road is, besides arnt cycle lanes a handy way of filtering? i know i use em after checking the coast is clear, same with bus lanes
