This is a small article from this months FastBikes magazine. Worrying stuff !!! Shocked

Quote:
The Department for Transport has given the official go-ahead for microchipped number plates, and the trial is expected to begin later this year.

The first plates will be trialed on government vehicles and police cars. It would be really interesting if we could get access to the tracking - so we can find out what the hell they get up to all day.

The claimed point of the exercise is to see if they can be used for automatic toll collection, traffic flow analysis, and crime reduction, but the implications for other uses are clearly much wider.

The tag plates have built-in batteries, allowing them to broadcast data to fixed receivers at the roadside.

A single reader can identify dozens of vehicles fitted with an e-Plate moving at any speed at a distance of up to 100 metres. The 'e-Plate' looks like a standard plate, which is tamper proof and has an embedded chip which cannot be seen or removed. It is self powered with a battery life of up to 10 years. The implications for infringing on our civil liberties are enormous, and the scope for fines bases on average speed monitoring can't be ignored.

I noticed when I was in Singapore that all vehicles (bikes included) had a small device which was used to monitor routes and such (for toll collection I believe). I don't know if people tamper with them or not...

If it got to the point where driving/riding became completly pointless and too much scope for fines/being tracked I would give up.

Not being fucked out of mega bucks for trying to get around.

if you remove your tracker, you are obviously a terrorist so they will then hold you for 90days without trial.

I've noticed that lots of green poles with solar panels on them have been recently erected on roads around the country. They have nothing attached to them and I have often wondered what they are for, perhaps this answers my questions....

Arrow Step 1 - take bike to car scrapyard

Arrow Step 2 - chat to the guy on the crane, and ask him to carry out step number 4 after you have carried out number 3

Arrow Step 3 - remove numberplate

Arrow Step 4 - lower the rather powerful electromagnet close to the number plate, and activate

Arrow Step 5 - re fit number plate and ride away...

Jack

Im pretty sure they wont be allowed to do this. Perhaps it will get as far as the police force as they are paid for what they are 'supposed' to do. As for putting them on civilian vehichles, this indeed, bullshit. I mean fucksake, if you do something and get away with it, its usually fair game (eg. paying tolls, parking tickets). Speeding could also be an instant charge offence, depending on how far apart your chip broadcasts, they could work out an average speed(though it would be a difficult formula, and would have to allow for overtaking etc.). Theres also ALOT of problems with their plan: someone would find out where the chips are implaned, you could simply put a tiny hole through them, done. They will be severely seseptical to any electro magnetic interference. Are they really going to pay to re issue EVERYONES number plates? Our government? I think not! Unless they intend on making a revenue margin from it.

It's just going to be like identity cards. A big massive drain on our tax money, that goes flop in the end because it infringes on civil rights, and ultimately could be spent on better things.

Think what a difference the money they put into this will make if they put it towards alternative sources of power instead?!

If this ever happened I think datatag would go out of business.

Although I know of bikes which were fully datatagged up when they were stolen and no part of them were ever traced. I'm not so sure how effective Datatags are. Does anyone know of a Datatag success story?

However these numberplate chips would be foolproof.

well it would be a fantastic backfire if the whole countrie decided to just drive/ ride plateless instead...of course that wont happen, but enough speed cameras get blown up already, theres no way these things would last a minute.

Having just had my bike knicked, I'd welcome a tracker.

^^^
In singapore the taxis all have a device which communicates with sensors on certain toll roads.
Considering they still have execution over there I'd probably not mess with it.

Something similar was mentioned a couple of years ago whereby all vehicles had some sort of device fitted to collect tolls which people said they wouldn't mind as long as road tax was scrapped. Nothing ever came of it though. The cost implications are horrendous...would probably mean more gatsos Mad
