CBR regulator/rectifier? More problems!

My cbr600f has a battery problem. I have just charged the battery, and started her up. all is well. i disconected the charger, and left her runing for about 20 min. I went an turned it off, and tried to start agian, but the battery is dead! This is the 2nd battery ive tried in her, and i stil havent even been out on the road yet!

any ideas? would the reg/rectifier be killing my battery??


Also, my neighbour says his son has a crashed cbr in his garage, im not sure of the model or year, but do you think it might be possible to take it out of his and use it in mine? or would i be better with a new one?

Sounds more like that the battery isn't getting charged - that is. in your 20 mins of running, the ignition system plus anything else (lights) have drained the battery.

Certainly trying a different regulator/rectifier would be a start.

Could be the regulator / rectifier. Could be a fried battery.

Start the bike and put a voltmeter over the battery terminals and see what it reads.

Does the battery charger say the battery's fully charged?
When I finally cooked the battery on my CBR, there was no charging it no matter how long it was left plugged in.

Do you have a jumpstarter / jump leads? When mine was cooked you could connect the jump leads and it still wouldn't start cos the battery was totally dead and presumably not making a circuit. If the battery's good, but flat, it should let you start off a jump.

How old is this battery you're currently working with?
I'd be inclined to invest in a new one, rather than mess about with old batteries you don't know the true status of. Mine had given up after about 5 years (was OE), I think Swaffs' went this year as well.

Do the voltmeter test if you can.

getting a lend of my mates multi meter soon,,,,,again

its a new battery, was stone dead tho, i think the imobiliser must have drained it. the charger wouldnt charg it, but i put a current across the charger to trick it into thinking the battery had a wee bit of power, which then allowed the charger to charge the battery. im charging the battery again, and then im going to disconect it and see how much charg it looses just sitting there off the charge.

If your reg/rec has stuck open then it would be frying the batteries and putting a strain on the rest of the bike electrics, can cause a lot of EXPENSIVE damage. Best bet would be to get it started and get the multimeter across the battery. Over 15 volts when you're at around 5,000rpm and it's overcharging, under 14 volts and it's undercharging and will need replacing either way. Only need to run it for a minute or two to check .

Still havent got my mates multimeter, but i took my battery off the charger there about 30 min ago, and it seems to be holding the charge,

it appears that while the bike is on, with the lights on, it is drawing power from the battery which is not being replaced, but when the bike is off, the battery will hold its charge.

could this mean that the reg/rectifier is ok, and it is infact my altenator?

i have started the bike, and am leaving it running without the lights on to see what happens.

EDIT; after leaving it running for 20 min with the lights off, it restarted ok, so the battery must not be discharged. i have put the lights on, and will leave it for another 20 min or so, and see if the battery has discharged.


i will hopefully have a voltage reading sometime soon lol, i guess it might help

ARGH, i went back out to the bike to see it in a cloud of smoke!!! The bloody thing overheated!!!!! coolant was boiling over and pishing all over the floor!!

should the fan come on when the electrics are on, but the engin is off?

the temp gauge was right off the scale!

You are doing it all arse about face, you can't guess at it you NEED the multimeter which will show you straight away where the problem is going to be.
Forget the overheating for the moment, don't start it again until you can check the charging, you could do some serious expensive electrical damage if you don't.
A cheapo digital multimeter is only a tenner and will do all you need, always worth having as well.

You need to be giving it some revs for it to be charging the battery to any decent level, just idling it will do bugger all (apart from make your bike overheat).

And yes, the fan should come on with electrics on but the engine off.

Just charge the battery and take the damn thing for a ride!
