If it fits you well, it's good.

I've still got an old Vemar, it's noticably heavier than my Shoei but then it was also noticably cheaper. None of the bits have fallen off over many years of use so it gets the Thumbs Up from me.

My helmet is a HJC and I can't fault it in any way. It cost me £90 and is comfortable, hasn't fallen apart or anything.
Not sure how worth it it is to spend £300+ on Arais etc....do they do anything a cheaper lid doesn't?

They tend to be lighter and (in my experience) they last longer cos the padding stays in good nick for longer. I've worn my Shoei for over 2 years and it's still nice and tight, none of the cheaper helmets I've had beforehand have lasted that well. Though for the cost of one fancy helmet you could replace a cheaper one several times over so that's not necessarily a benefit.

But buying one in the belief that it'll 'protect you better' is 99% balls as far as I'm concerned. You'll get best protection from the lid that fits you best, everything else is just comfort, longevity and often a big slice of pose value.

I bought mine for the comfort. It's really very light indeed.

My vemar helmet looks crap, is heavy and mists up at ALL times but its a lot more comfortable than my expensive Suomy helmet. Just got me a mountain of anti-fog/mist products and no problems.

Have seen some very expensive Vemar helmets at around the £200 mark which i really liked but they didnt do my size Sad

If its comfortable then you cant go wrong unless it's noticably heavy as it may start to hurt your neck over long distances, and see how much it mists up with the visor closed as motorway riding with your visor one notch open is no fun at all!

What about carbon-fibre and kevlar helmets? Are they not much better than fibreglass?

Most difference in helmets is in the shell. Cheaper poly which doesn't last as long (as in needs replacing because it just wears out in sunlight etc.). Then there's fibreglass ones (and possibly more exotic materials) which last longer and are said to absorb part of an impact (rather than relying on the lining to do this).

The other costs of a helmet are in the lining, the padding and the design. A good design will have sorted the ventilation. Depends also if it comes with anything like the pinlock anti-fog system. Bear in mind you'll also pay a premium for a certain brand and/or paintwork.

However, given they're all tested to a minimum standard in order to be sold and worn legally then it comes down to fit, how deep your wallet is and how much a style junkie you are Wink

HTH Thumbs Up

You've probably snapped your neck by that point. Smile

Do you think the weight of the lid makes any difference to the protection it would give you? MY akito helmet weighs nothing, but yet my stepdads (Arai i think) weighs an absolute ton! But yet they are both Gold rated...

I used to have a Caberg Flip up helmet but a 4 hour drive up north nearly broke my neck so decided to invest in light weight helmet. I went and read reviews on Shoei helmets and found a lot of positive feedback. Went to a local Yamaha dealer tried one and it fits great. I found one bran new not been touched on ebay for about £80.
The helmet is the same as on this link:

https://www.hideout-leather.co.uk/folders/full_face_motorcycle_helmets/helmet_shoei_kagayama_tc5/

Very light, ventilation is superb compared to my Caberg and for the anti fog in the visor works great. It is a racing helmet the only criticism I have is that it can be a bit noisy (I normally listen to music on the bike anyway). If you have the money I would seriously recommend it it’s a early birthday present from my girlfriend.

I used to think expensive helmets were just about people with more money than sense, but at the bike show, on a rideout I tried an arai astro R and it was amazing.

Light and well ventilated doesnt sound amazing, but it was amazing and I think it was down to it being light and well ventilated.

If I have the money I might get one one day and I could justify it by kidding myself that it would be better protection in a crash.

yeah i used to think the same but that 4 hour trip with my head down low my neck was killing me. The helemet just feels so much better at high speeds and the vents when all open freeze your head (in Scotland). It is a hell of a lot of money to spend but i would say its worth it.
