There's very little difference between the stepped seat and single seat versions where they are a similar model. It's only the recent CBR600RR versions that are significantly more sporty.

The second letter for the earlier bike designates the year it was made; so fm was an early one, while fy was the last one they used letters for.

Models before the fx (99) are known as 'jelly moulds' because their fairing looks a bit like it was created in a jelly mould. There was significant changes for the FX model.

Had you considered the kawasaki zx6r; similar bike, but a bit cheaper often (couple on here for very good prices at the mo).

600f - generic designation for anything that's not a 600RR

F(letter) denotes the year, as G says. These are all carbed.
F(number)i denotes the year from 2001 onwards. These are all injected.

F(number)Sport denotes the 'sport' version. This has the stepped seat, a couple of minor engine changes and one extra tooth on the back sprocket as standard.

So:

1987 - 1990 (FH/FJ/FK/FL) The old (proper) jellymould.
1991 - 1994 (FM/FN/FP/FR) The first 'steelie' (steel frame you see).
1995 - 1998 (FS/FT/FV/FW) Improved steelie with more power.
1999 - 2000 (FX/FY) Major change. Ally framed version, lighter and more powerful.
2001 - now (F1/F2/F3...) Fuel injected version of the FX/FY. Sport version also available.
2004 - now (RR-3/RR-4...) Major change. More sports-focused bike.

Some bollocks they write on the side of bikes to make them sound faster, like 'Ultima Light' or 'Direct Air Injection'. Smile

I learnt something today...

The new (ie. 05) 600Fs dont have fully adjustable suspension like the previous models all did. Apparently Honda think the standard setup is 'good enough'.

Good enough for road, maybe, but on track mine benefitted immensely from a bit of stiffening up. Honda trying to stretch the gap between the F and the RR?
