winter storage

iv been advised to take the battery out of my bike over the winter as this will render it usless come spring?

any comments on this?

my argument is that supplies the alarm with power to stop any scum.

also i like to start it up now and then stop the top end getting to dry of oil and keep things circulating.

you dont need to take it out, you could just disconnect it.

you could use the alarm and keep it connected if you remember to trickle charge it from time to time

if you dont want to charge it, disconnect the battery

you dont need to trickle charge it all the time.

i wd have thought charge for 24 hours once every month wd do

my rs125 hs a voltmeter built in, so i can tell when the battery is getting low

i wish my other bikes had this

I really don't understand this 'off the road for the winter' stuff.

I readily admit to being a fair weather rider - taking the opportunity to get the bike out for commuting and/or fun whenever the sun's shining (don't get me wrong, I've ridden in the wet but I just don't find it as enjoyable). Anyway, onto my point...

Over the winter I'll cover my bike and put it on the Optimate, but there's always the odd sunny day every couple of weeks that finds the bike begging me to unwrap it and take it out. Cold, crisp, sunny days, long shadows and the cool chill of the wind creeping under your helmet - It's fantastic.

Invest in an optimate and a bike cover but don't put it to bed for 3 months - you've taxed and insured it for that period, you might as well use it when the opportunity arises - a bit of a swill off after the ride with some warm soapy water and a chamois rub down will get the dreaded salt off.

As for the 'too much power' comment, you don't have to go everywhere with your ears pinned back, spinning up at every opportunity - It's down to the user to determine how fast the bike goes not the other way round

i sat my dsa through the winter and that was enough winter riding for me.

so because i don't ride in the winter do's this make me less of a biker? i don't think. also i don't think sexuality come's into it.

power? it only takes a small amount of throttle despatched by cold hands(lack of feeling) cold tyres and the power from 1000cc to see my pride and joy sliding down the road.

also i like the heater in the car.

I ride when I want to ride, riding in rain isn't (usually) much fun.

Fair enough taking the bike off the road in the winter, why pay the stupid insurance if you are going yo only use it a few days?


I'd personally take the battery in the house where it's not freezing cold!

got to keep her insured to build up my no claims bonus. and also if it did grow legs and walked. its better being insured. although i have heard that some household insurances will cover it in the shed. not sure though.

Cars stay out on the road all winter, so why do bikes alledgedly dissolve at the first sign of road salt

My NTV650 is what some might describe as a 'winter bike' but it has to do my commuting winter and summer, and the odd day out, so I'm not really bothered about depreciation given that it only cost a grand in the first place.

well if your bike rot's to the ground, you would only lose a grand. when your bike is worth around six grand you tend to be a bit more cautious.

ahhhhh my god!!!! just cause it rains dosent mean all the salt is gone. see that slimey crap that gets on your visor,windscreen and everywhere else! you know the stuff u need to wipe off every 20 mile if the roads are damp in winter. well thats our mate road salt. lick your visor nxt time you'll soon see
