My GPZ500 was stolen last month and I'm looking for a new bike.

Since then I've passed my car test and am planning on using a car as my main transport. I've always wanted to get into off road biking, not competitively, just for fun. I want to be able to do it legally, with my own bike, as cheap as possible. What are the options? I've heard about green laning and using private land, but how common are they? I'm in Manchester so it's not exactly the countryside.

Is there anyone local that could maybe suggest some locations? I hear Buxton is good, but can anyone tell me exact locations?
