Im thinking of doing a bit of a tour along the cost of northern france next year, running pretty much parrallel to England. Has anyone toured this part of France and is it worth doing?
Cheers
Chris

I think like most that's been touring in Europe I've been through there. It's pleasant enough for bimbling along but quite built up with lots of villages along the roads.

Mcjamweasel and Karen Moomin did a tour there a while back.

I agree with Maurice, not an unpleasant place but not really that different to rural parts of England.

If you're looking to do some touring without racking up mega-miles, then it's probably best to stick to the UK.

But the ferry crossing takes something like 36 hours, and costs at least £300.

If you want to be able to boast having done some European touring, then Belgium isn't very far and is something a bit different to where everybody else goes.

Exactly why I haven't taken the long ferry yet, and I think £300 is on their cheaper end of the scale Shocked. Cheaper to ride through France and the Pyrhnees (sp). The North of France may be a little on the tame side, but the mid and South are great. Smile

I just got a quote for portsmouth to bilbao on the P&O website.

It costs £220 each way for a motorcyle and one passenger. I had to select a 2 berth cabin also. Basically if therewere 2 people on 2 seperate bikes then you could share a room which would help with the costs.

Eitherway lets assume the crossing is £180 single (once you have split it between you and your mate). My bike would ride across france for less than that - 1000 miles = £100 fuel. I would rather pay less and experiance more.

From what I've read the cheaper P&O ferry is a little lacking compared to Brittany Ferries aswell.

i.e.

Quote:
If I recall, Portsouth-Bilbao is run by P&O, the earlier description as a bastard-child of a motorway service station and a crap small night-club is spot-on. Add inedible food, scuzzy people treating themselves to a "mini-cruise" and an interminable second night on the boat for the full flavour.

In marked contrast, the Plymouth-Santander route is operated by Brittany Ferries, French. So think great food, a much higher standard of accommodation and no scuzzies and you'll quickly appreciate that the extra miles down to Cornwall are the best you'll ever ride.

Theres a few of the tour operators do northern france tours. They're good little trips if you've never toured abroad before. If you dont fancy booking with one of then then why not just get a brochure off em. It'll give you an idea of where to go.
I did a few trips with MCi Tours, they were good, I did their Switzerland trip 2 years running plus a weekend trip to Belgium.
