I you don't add anti-freeze, thne remove all water before tonight, as your pipes and radiator will no doubt split!

Water and Anti Freeze mixed anything from 5/1 to 10/1 respectively will do it.

PS, if anyone is thinking of doing a track day, please please remove all anti freeze from the collant system and add distilled water only, as Antifreeze is super slippery on the track if you get knocked off, therefore everyone beind you WILL fall off as well! Please do not use Antifreeze on the track!

Anti-freeze also contains anti-corrosion additives to help prevent head-gasket failure etc

Thumbs Up

My other half was telling me last night as we were adding the anti-freeze to the "outside" bikes that 2-strokes don't need it?

Or at least that my son's 100cc Yamaha Neos doesn't?

He said something about it being to do with them being air-cooled. I think. I really should listen when he's trying to teach me how to look after the bikes shouldn't I? Rolling Eyes

No Nath, just not listening!

My bike already had antifreeze in it, we got the VT500 going & warmed up and did that one too then I asked if we needed to do the scoot too. He said no, so I said how come, has it already got some? And I'm fairly sure he said no, it was because it's a 2-stroke and being an air-cooled engine it worked differently and didn't need any.

At least, I think that's what he said....... Confused Embarassed

Babyyam.

Your absolutely right. The cool air drawn through the bike when moving provides all the cooling it needs. It's usually aided by additional fins on the engine block to disperse the heat.

Their just taking the pish because you answered your own queery in your statement. Ie, an air-cooled engine can't be liquid-cooled.

Thumbs Up

But yes, you should listen Smile

No, not if you buy normal antifreeze. Read the back of the bottle, it will tell you, you can buy different consistencies.

Cheers

As a rule of thumb. I would do a 50/50 mix, most manufacturers recommend it. It's not as if antifreeze is expensive. Wink

Yes it does on the back of the bottle and that's for cars benefit..... A bike requires 50/50 of straight antifreeze to distilled water as they run a good deal hotter and have a puny radiator by comparison.
