Afaik its illegal to be useing anything over 60watt on a motorbike in the uk?

Who has upgraded their lights to higher wattage?

Tired of squinting all year round, (changeing headlamp if theres no big improvement)... i've decided to get some driveing lamps (£25) and upgrade the wiring and bulb to 90/100watt on the main light, is it likely to be picked up on mot? (afaik they dont test it, just the aim)
whats the penalty for useing higher rated bulbs? (looked allover the place but not found anything)

Anyone who has, have you noticed a real difference?

Hi

Illegal on vehicles newer than a certain date (mid 80s I think).

I did run a 100/80 bulb in a bike years ago. Did marginally improve lighting, but not that much. Also melted the wires to the ignition switch.

All the best

Keith

I would have thought that a modern 60w lamp would give off more light than an old 100w lamp. Which is probably why 100w ones are illegal now I suppose.

could go along the lines of converting to a HID bulb kit, quite expensive though, and a small amount of wiring to do.

wooo really? well this is 82, so that might be good..

Got the wiring all worked out, off relays, so frying of wiring won't (hopefully) be an issue.. (somebody else with a cx has used them for years on standard wireing, but imo its still a crap idea)

I think the rubbish light is mostly on account of the reflector being old (its certainly no mirror finish) but i can allways change that later, finding one with fiting brackets might be tricky, looking into it.. (i'll be gutted if the new one is no better though Sad )

hmm.. these bulbs dont seem to be much more expensive...

It may sound allot of effort, but even in summer 80% of the rideing i do is at night or very early morning (only really just thought about it actually)

EDIT: retro-man - I had very seriously considered a hid kit, at the moment its more than i can justify spending, even if it can be removed and probably used on any other bike i buy later, £200 is the cheapest i've seen up to now Sad

As a general rule, if people are flashing you, it is too bright or too high and you might get pulled for it. Not being flashed, it isn't dazzling people, coppers won't notice.

I would imagine the same goes for the MOT. I had an uber bulb in my old GPZ and was never pulled up for it. (although the MOT guy just made sure the dip and beam were working by shining it on the wall). I also had 165w of conical spotlight beam on my MZ and never had a problem.

If it is a problem, you can always put the lower wattage bulb back in for the MOT, it will still work with the relays.

Chris: I told you go for a "cibie or bosch" conversion.
My mate has what you need for £10!
