Well the other day I decided to do a mini service on my bike.
I changed the oil and filter and plugs, and I noticed the plugs were fouled quite badly, so I decided to take a look at the air filter and it looked like this.

I wondered why the bike spluttered on idling sometimes.
I spose I should check these things more often, and the filter looks as old as the bike.
I now have a new one in there thanks to David Silver Spares, and it only took one day to get from them! A big thumbs up to them. |

Before it holed, the blocked air filter would have caused so much restriction that the rings, piston ring grooves and liner would have taken a hammering.
That engine was working as a Vacuum pump.
Then once holed, the unfiltered air could/would have carried dirt/dust etc into the engine which turns to hard carbon grinding polish when caught up in the combustion process.
I hope your engine hasn't sufered tooooo much.

It wasn't blocked, its just the fact that the age of it means it turned into powder.
Also in Hondas wisdom they put 2 gauze filters after the filter anyway, so I doubt much if any at all went it to the carbs/engine. |

I wish I'd learnt this sort of stuff while I had my ped. I paid £50 just getting my air filter unblocked twice! |

While we're on air filters I've been having real trouble getting hold of an air filter for my mito so been riding a week or so without one in there. The bike mechanic guy said it shouldn't do any harm in the short term (couple of weeks) is this right? |

Wouldn't have thought so, it is unlikely that any bits of muck are going to get in through the airbox.
It might make the bike run a bit lean though. I would refrain from thrashing it if you don't have an air filter in place. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
