Bloody satnav.... Twisted Evil

This morning on my normal filtering on London's busiest road I encountered a car that started to drift in its lane more wildly then when a driver is on his/her mobile.....braking sharply...my thought was "what the f....", as I gingerly went passed him I noticed him fiddling with the touchscreen attached to the windscreen.

Another bloody distraction for drivers who have no interest whatsoever in what's going on around them!! Twisted Evil

Thought cagers had no idea what was going on around them anyway, hence the number of bike accidents where drivers havent bothered to check there's no riders overtaking or what?

I'm begining to think that since most of my bike accidents have not involved any cagers (Except after to assist lifting bike.) that I'm more of a danger to myself than cagers. Laughing

Just a leedle tweest babee. Twisted Evil

Why do they need to look at the road? They just follow where the sat nav shows them to go 'turn left now'.

A couple of months ago me and another car were cut up by a 4x4 on a roundabout for the m4. I get past them on the slip road and notice the driver is using a remote control for his stereo while gently swerving.

I rather enjoyed not letting him onto the motorway and making him go up the hard shoulder a bit, then leaving a big gap when he did get on </petty>.

I heard they're developing one that is like a HUD, projects the image of the map onto the windscreen.

Great, like drivers need more distractions....

Yet another addition to the 'SMIDSY' (Sorry Mate, I didn't See You) mob, I think Evil or Very Mad

Back in my day, cagers were penalised by insurance companies for being a smoker, since you had to take your eyes of the road to light yer fag Shocked

Surely they could just have shouted to the man walking in front with a red flag, and asked him to keep an eye out while they lit the fag?

They already have those in the new M6, if you remember the TG test, the speedo was projected onto the windscreen.

If I remember rightly it was some other BMW, maybe even that one as well, that projects the indicator arrows onto the windscreen. Eh?

Just a stone's throw from sat nav on the windscreen.

Or...

The LCD windscreen predicted just a couple or three years ago, and prototyped by Jaguar and BMW, I think.

Whereby, you could drive in 100% complete darkness and have the view of the road/terrain in front of you projected directly onto the windscreen.

I never saw any mention in those inventions that gave a full peripheral view. What about the side windows and rear views? Maybe there were too many switches to twiddle and buttons to press, taking the drivers eyes off the 'road in front' (probably why we've heard so little about them since their conception ?).

I dunno Confused

It's fairly simple to set up a HUD unit projecting pretty much anything, it would just be quite expensive which I think is probably why we aren't seeing many of them.

As long as they retain their transparency, I don't think they'll be a huge problem safety-wise, and if they are keeping a driver's eyes off his dash and in the general direction of the road, so much the better.

I thought the corvette C5 had a HUD on it, not sure if that was just a one-off or not though...

Got another one as well.
IPODS!!!
Driving to work the other morning & noticed a car weaving a bit. I could see something lit up in the drivers hand. I thought it was a mobile at first, but as I drew alongside I noticed it was an ipod & the driving was busy searching through the tracks on it.

Let's face it, everyone...

When the majority cagers aren't looking in front of them, they sure as hell ain't looking in their mirrors or behind them Evil or Very Mad

They ain't got a clue about what's going on around them.

Me? I'm different. Because I'm a biker and a cager, so, I make sure I check for everything when I'm in the car Thumbs Up

And I'm sure most other bikers are the same when they're in the car (I hope) Thumbs Up

The other danger of satnav is a lack of preperation!

"Turn Left Here" Says the computer lady to the driver in the right hand lane. Have followed someone relying on satnav before... not my fondest experience of driving in Bristol! Bet I could have got us there quicker too considering the ammount of dead ends we ended up going down!

That's an interesting point....I saw a car this morning at Hanger Lane in one lane heading towards the A40 Northbound then cut right across 4 lanes to go Southbound, I was at the lights so no danger but it was a "what the f*ck?" moment. If the Satnav woman says turn left and people don't know their left from the right (you'd be surprised) there is going to be more accidents!

To go against the flow here. At work I regularly drive on my own to places I don't know and therefore know how difficult it can be to drive and navigate. I would prefer someone to use Sat Nav than to be map/sign reading on the move. If used properly Sat Nav can be set up before you leave and then just follow the spoken instructions. What can be wrong with that?
Just because one person can't drive safely it doesn't mean Sat Nav is crap.

No but it's the people who can't use it properly or fiddle with settings while they're driving that make it bloody dangerous. It's about the same as sending a text on a mobile phone, I'd guess.

I'm going to stick up for the car drivers a bit. Since driving i have noticed that it's not very easy to see bikes as well as you would think. Its all well and good saying check your mirrors but the bikes have been and gone by the time you've had a chance to look.

You can't keep your eyes glued to the mirror. I'm sure the other car drivers will agree and the ones that don't get in a car drive around and see what i mean. (legally of course)

Thumbs Up

When I first started talking to people about sat nav at work I got a bit worried about customers that were saying "I'm bloody useless at finding my way around". That obviously leads to people turning blindly when the sat nav tells them to, there's nothing that can replace a bit of planning before you get in the car.

I've always been a bit suprised that people can have devices like that in the front (taxi drivers with their jobs list, sat nav etc) when it is illegal (I think?) for a TV to be in the front where the driver can see it. If a TV is illegal how come you can just replace it with something else to distract you?

So without sat nav what would be the right preparation for a journey into an unfamiliar city and how would that be better than sat nav
