I've asked about this bike before, and once again, I'm contemplating buying one, if and when any compensation money makes its way to me.

My only worry is, I believe they are no longer in production, or at least on sale in the UK. Am I right in thinking that? If that is the case, what would be the situation with servicing and spares?

From what I can garner from the various bike mags, the italian bike manufacturers are often in shakey financial shape at the best of times, so can I count on continued support if I buy one of these?

Plenty of fairly new, low milage models around, even a few unused and '05 registered examples. I love the angular looks and the features of it, even the panniers look superb! Even a brand new example was priced at less about £5500, which would only be a grand and a half over the payout I should be due for whats left of my Fazer. That should put me in a position to upgrade my 100cc scooter to a 250 or 400 for commuting and short hops, with the Futura for fun and long journeys.

I take it you mean the RST, not AF1 (sorry, i've got 125s on the brain). You should be fine, Aprilia have just been bought by piaggio, and are going from strength to strength. Aprillia sales are set to boom in the next year or two, so you shouldn't have any problems finding parts in the future, but they're not popular bikes going off the sales of Honda's VFR. Bloody nice bikes, those are Thumbs Up

I have looked at the VFR, it is nice, but was smaller in the flesh than I thought. Futura seemed a lot bigger and meatier when I saw one, and I like the way it's pretty different to other bikes in the same class. Not always a good thing, but it's intrigued me!

Hi

The engine is basically the same as used in several other Aprilias, and a lot of the running gear should be easy to source elsewhere.

Main thing seems to be to find an Aprilia dealer who will actually try to get the spare parts.

All the best

Keith

you could always buy a rover car Smile
you would have about the same luck getting stuff,
appilias although very nice i think there over priced for what they are, same with mv's and duks,
you pay over the odds for parts that fit on high performance bikes, also being a high perfoprmance bike usually means high maintenance,,
jap bikes go on on and on,

The Tuono's possibly even harder to get hold of though.

But the tuono uses pretty much all the same parts as the RSV, making it a more common bike, the Futura is pretty rare, but like Keith said, it shares parts with other models. The Futura and Tuono fulfil different roles.

Aprilia spares used to be far cheaper than japanese bike spares. They caught onto that scam though and pushed them up even higher. Only times I have bought Ducati spares I have been quite surprised how cheap they are compared to the Japanese makes.

All the best

if you are willing to wait until your spare part turns up on ebay, ebay is cheap

its often quicker to wait until it shows up on ebay rather than wait for something on order from a dealer, as once you buy on ebay it comes quickly

They still list the bike on the UK website Futura not sure if that means they are still in production, they aren't listed on the .com site.

As Keith says getting hold of the part is the hardest thing. I never had any trouble ordering the part I was after, it was the many weeks wait and actually getting it in my hands.

Don't want to turn this into a buy this instead thread, but . . .

How about a Trumpet Sprint?

Had a look - can get a new or nearly new Futura for less than 6k, I'd be looking at another 2k for a basic Sprint. It's a beautiful bike, I totally agree, and probably technically far more capable than the Futura, I just think that the Futura's size and style suits me more. As I've admitted before, I'm a fairly tame novice rider, with no interest in knee-downs and 140mph cruising. I like the idea of a big comfy bike with a bit of poke. I bet I'd enjoy a Sprint, I just feel I'd prefer an Aprilia.

I have to admit though, all the shiny bits are very, very enticing Very Happy

Less weather protection but probably quite similar is the Aprilia Falco. Half-faired so may not be what your after. Not very common again, I like the looks of it myself.

as you are doing a lot of riding in town, i reckon you should try a big trail bike style bike as they feel great in town

i tried a dominator but you could get something a bit plusher, transalp, varadero, etc

they are very well balanced and very nippy but still stable at motorway speeds, much better as a commuter than a sports tourer in my opinion (im comparing to a vfr750)

wd still be quite fun at weekends

falco is more of a full-on sports bike disguised as a tourer(very similar to rsv but comfier riding position)

Ok, sorry. Wink

I'm fairly sure that the Falco and the Futura both use the V60 twin that the Mille uses in one form or another. Aprilia needed to get their money's worth after paying for their own engine.

one advantage of the futura, is that it has a programmable ecu which means you can adjust the fuel mappings and other stuff with a cable and tuneboy software. you can also do this with the triumph sprint and a few other bikes

bit like a power commander but better

you can unleash the true potential of the bike rather than except the neutered version that is standard set up to pass emmissions regulations (particularly at low revs)

I have a Tuono and I love it.

Try this site for advice about any sort of Aprilia - very helpful people there.

From what i heard the Aprilia parts are quite hard to get hold of second hand, because not many of them are around in the UK. Although my Aprilia dealership seems pretty adament they could support me with my RX50 nomatter what. I love my Aprilia and i wouldent rather have any other bike *strokes bike* Smile

On the subject of parts for discontinued bikes..

I had a complete new fairing, courtsey of A.Cager's insurance, for my NSR125, which went out of production 2-3 years ago. The dealer said they are still making the genuine parts, and have to for a number of years, to support customers. They can still get pretty much any part, brand new, manufactured for this discontinued bike. Should think it'll be the same with the 'prilla, but wouldn't put money on it.

Why do you need a new bike anyway, just before your accident I'm sure you told us you'd gone back to your scooter... isn't that enough of an adreneline rush?? Laughing

Cheers,
Jon

I said I'd gone back to my scooter for the winter, rather than rust up my Fazer and risk binning it and me.

That last bit really worked out, huh?

Need a big bike for long journeys and the summer, and intend to upgrade my scooter to something with a few more cubes as well.

Hope you find a bike that suits your needs Smile
