I'm sure i've read somewhere providing you have insurance you can ride the bike to go get parts aswell as ride to the test centre and back? is that only on the day of the test you can do that? I've booked mine in for next wednesday. Be nice to ride it before then sort out any niggles that might be their after stretching it out on the motorway.

If not could you ride it to the test centre legally the day before the test to leave it with them overnight? I used to do that with my cars but the car moters isnt far unlike the bike test centre.

No idea on the parts front, but riding it to the test place the day before to leave it should be fine.

You can ride to the place to get your stuff done, yes. Not get your parts for it and go back home, no. (not to my knowledge you can't)

Yes to the second bit I'm sure, you're still taking it to an MOT appointment aren't you. Thumbs Up

It is still legal as long as you call ahead in advance so they know your registration and know you're coming etc. Thumbs Up

Echo whats been said really. You can ride to a testing station without MOT or Tax but must have insurance. The vehicle must be booked in and you should take the shortest route to get there: i.e. not go to get parts on your way!

cool cheers

i'm sure if you were to get pulled deviating from the quickest route to the test centre you could just say that your lost lost or your not confident enough to use motorways yet and you got lost on the B roads trying to find the place Wink "but office the nice lady walking her dog when i stopped to ask for directions told me the quickest way is through all these nice twisty country lanes " Sad

They will check with the garage whether you're booked in for an MOT or not so I wouldn't consider going for a ride without one.

The only journey you're allowed to make is to a pre-booked MOT. If you were riding to the test centre a few days early to leave it there, i doubt they'd do anything.

If you risk it, you'll get pulled, if you don't risk it you won't get pulled. It's just awful luck.

If you need MOT advice, talk to stinkwheel, the resident bovine proctologist, he does MOTs.

if you wanted to leave it overnight, then they should not have a problem telling the police that you were booked for that day, just ask the mech nicely, i'm sure he's a biker aswell

as for going for parts, thats a no no, you can go to the test centre and back, you leave within reasonable time to get there without doing the shopping on route

Glad you've posted this, my MOT is up soon, but I don't intend starting riding again (daily) till March.

Plus i'm going to need a new exhaust and don't fancy the cost near xmas.

How much is an MOT for a 125 normally? Mine is well past due and has needed work ie back brakes (including hosing and master cylinder replacement) also rear damper. All sorted now - I think it would be good to know some of the common fauklts they find too if anyone could enlighten me.
Thanks

all bikes are 25 quid now, due to the new computer system

as for mot, depends where you take it, the main points are straight frame and forks, oil leaks on forks, brakes, suspension, steering, everything else is minor, if indicators dont work and you cant get them working just take them off, its not a legal requirement on a bike, neither are mirrors, well not at the minute anyway, they chanced to change that before long, if the lights out of alignment they normally just do it, if thats all it fails on then just ask them to align it

anyone any idea how to roughly align the headlight yourself out of interest? May aswell get it sorted if it can be done yourself. You can do it with a car by shining it on a wall at a certain but i'm not sure what the distance should be on a bike and where it should be pointing.

I quite like the way this preparation guide is layed out something for you to scan through before taking it for its mot that's what i've been doing and everything seems fine according to that.

you can basically do the sme with the bike but you must have someone keeping hold of it off its stands, and it should point slightly left, and make sure it doesnt go up to far once you have sat on it

Taken from some site i found with google.
Quote:
If a car fails an MOT, ie, is it then off the road? is it illegal not to get it corrected straight away? how long do you have to get it repaired (if you can't afford to straight away..)?

With the MOT scheme, there is no actual time limit for a car to be retested. We once had one come back for retest after over a year, and after checking with the guys at the Vehicle Inspectorate, because it hadn't been tested in between, it was classed as a retest.

Having a MOT failure sheet does allow you to drive on the road without a MOT certificate - but ONLY to be driven to have pre-booked repairs carried out or going back for a pre-booked retest (so chances are if you were to get stopped at 11 at night, you couldn't use that as an excuse!).

If the fail was carried out before the last certificate had run out, the old certificate would cover any driving around while repairs were waiting to be done - but there again, driving around in a car knowing that it's failed a test, I think, is an offence. Complicated or what?

I do car mot's myself but even im not 100% on the legality of it. Im sure on the back of a failure sheet it says it is an offence to drive without a current mot certificate even if you are going to and from an mot ? WTF Laughing Neutral

Maybe a bad turn of phrase on my part?

I might have said something like "I MOT'ed my GPZ." meaning something similar to "I taxed my car" ie. I went to get tax for my car, not that I issue tax discs.
