Got my eye on a bike, looks quiet nice but a little confused.
I have crap knowledge on DVLA, V5 blah blah blah
Bike has this advertised with it.

Quote:
This machine has been recorded as an 'ABI' catagory D (stolen/recovered). To look up definitions of catagories go to department of transport's web site www.vosa.gov.uk

The machine is sold without the 'V5' registration document as has come direct from the insurance company, to obtain new ownership documents in your name simply fill out the official 'DVLA V62' application form I will supply with the bike and send to 'DVLA' Swansea just as you would with a standard private purchase.

Is this a duff bike? As I said I dunno anything about the V5 crap so any help will be good.

The V5 (or now the V5C) is the form often called the 'log book' for a vehicle. It lists info on the vehicle, registration, frame/chassis number, engine number, previous owners, etc.

You need one to validate the vehicle for MOT, show ownership and the like.
Replacement log book (V5C) info is here.

A category D write off is
This site (click me) wrote:
Category D - Repairable salvage. Minimal damage, probably not structural, but insurer does not want to repair, even though it might be economic to do so. Often stolen and recovered after claim has been paid. Or for unusual models or grey imports where the difficulty of obtaining new parts hinders a quick repair. Does not need VIC inspection to return to road. Recorded with HPI, AA, and the like.

So basically you'll have to repair the damage and get it back on the road. I also believe that even if less than 3 years old you'll need an MOT (but not sure, others may clarify that point).

Whether it's worth it or not depends on the cost of repairs. Also remember that the Category D will not be removed so will (should Confused) show on any HPI type checks when you sell. That'll effect the resale value, but then it should be cheap for you to buy for the same reason.

Cat D is no gteat shakes, probably just lock damage but the owner was paid out before it was recovered so it's listed.

Bike off Ebay with No V5 and listed as Cat D.

Personally I wouldn't touch it, but then I'm a naturally sceptical person.
It could well turn out to be all above board.

IMO insurance is a black art anyhow. You could 'phone with the same details to the same insurerer on different days and get two wildly different quotes.

As with all insurance best bet is to do a bit of calling around. Maybe ask the first one or two if you need to mention it's a Category D write off (they should be able to check anyhow based on the registration number). If they say it doesn't matter then you only mention it if asked - but check the small print of any policy.

Oh, and be careful of any seller saying 100% roadworthy. That doesn't necessarily mean it can be actually ridden away (especially if stolen and ignition/key barrel missing Confused). It also doesn't mean it'll pass an MOT. Remember: Buyer beware.

Best of luck if you decide to buy Thumbs Up

Sounds ok to buy to me, just apply for the logbook, do make sure you get some kind of receipt from the seller though, including address, price paid etc.

Good advice. I'd also check that the chassis and engine numbers are there for the V5.

FWIW I did put up this old thread with some bill of sales/receipts (scroll to the bottom and get those). Originally intended to help sellers but may be useful to a buyer.

Insurance shouldn't be any different, especially for a cat D which could be something as simple as a small irrelevent scratch on the frame.

The V5 will cost you £19 (it's only free for cat C) and just to make sure there is a genuine reason for not having the V5 it would be wise to call into a local car/bike dealer and ask them to run a hpi. They can usually be persuaded to do it for about a tenner and if it shows up as a cat D, as it should then everything should be fine.

You WILL Need to MOT it, so make sure you see it and give it a mini MOT of your own before you buy so you don't end up in the shit.

If it's been written off the MOT will be invalid, unless the seller has just put a full year on, and i'm being a total dimwit Whistle

You didn't see nothin!
