I'm looking at getting a VFR750 or 800. Not a VTEC though.
Wondering if anyone has much experience on one?
Whats MPG like?
I'm sure it's a great tourer but what's it like compared to say a TRX in terms of handling and personality (I rate that above everything in a bike)?
I know it won't be as racy as a 600 but I just dont like IL4's.

Dude you struck lucky, i've got a VFR800, 99 model, what ya wona know?
Got some pet niggles with the bike, but on the whole i can't fault it.
£17.00 ish to fill the tank and get 130 miles out of it, you could get more if you take it easy, but that's not biking is it?
Handling is superb for a big bike, better at higher speeds though.
Upto 5000 rpm the engine sings a beautifull tune, but after that it grunts into life with a smooth delivery power upto the red line, pulling all the way. With cog head on the back it's not a problem, still handles and still goes like a steam train.

Middle Finger Crying or Very sad Middle Finger I love my TRX.

Maybe you just couldn't ride it properly. Wink

Cheers vfr800 and coghead, did you find it was bike that dropped in to a corner easily or needed a lot push to get it in. How about the flickability?

Next step is test ride but just wanted some idea of what it's like.

Indeed, quite like mine.
If you approach it as an almost 900cc sports bike you're going to be disapointed (my zx9r has around twice the power), but if you think of it as a 400cc/sv650 rival, it all makes a bit more sense.

If you want this on any bike, drop the yolks down the forks a bit or raise the rear ride height, either will quicken the steering.

The SV650 is way quicker than the TRX and a hell of a lot nicer to ride.

depends who's riding it....

I know a couple of people who own(ed) an ex race TRX, and they all loved it..

I know someone else that has one as a trackbike/sunday rocket in addition to his everyday thunderace, and was quicker on the TRX than an R1 round cadwell.. they aren't the most confortable, nor forgiving to ride (unlike an SV) but if you can ride properly, they are a hoot.

I found the TRX that I rode to be a pig of a bike at low revs but I've never got on too well with V-twins anyway. The VFR is a much faster and much better built bike but I'd recommend riding both and then deciding. We're all different, after all.

Cheers

I have ridden a TRX I've got one. I agree the power delivery is cack almost everywhere but If you ride it with the clutch it makes things better.

G, I understand about dropping the yokes but even when doing that with the TRX it still takes a fair amount of effort to turn it in, it prefers to be in a straight line. I remember my CB-1 that basically fell in to corners whereas the TRX requres alot of force on the handlebars to force it round corners.

This makes me wonder about the VFR because this guy always seems to know what he's talking about.

The Viffer is a great bike. Looks good, comfy, capable of serious mileage and silly speeds too.

I have the 97 750 thats the FV. Generally thought of as the greatest ever incarnation of this motorcycle.

It has fuel light, a clock, big fat seat, these things do make a difference.

The only, only complaint I could make about it is the weight. IIRC it about 210 dry.

The VFR750 wouldd be better than inline 4 600's for long distnce as its lack of flickability makes it easy to ride in straight lines without fatigue. Inline 4 600's may be faster but you have to use the gearbox and rev the engine, while the vfr750 has torque in the mid range so you dont need to change down to accelerate.

I would only get a vfr750 if i was going to regularly ride more than 5 hours at a time. Although they are great, and inspire confidence, they take some of the thrill out as they feel so stable.

EH? Confused

Feeling stable, surely thats a good thing. I ride a hell of a lot faster on the VFR than I did my old 600 simply because it feels so stable. It feels 100% planted all the time. Very confidence inspiring.

I would say its faster than my zx6r simply because it pulls in any gear the 6r does not.

Personally out of the two I would go for the TRX850. I have seen and sat on both bikes. The TRX wins hands down for me, just like the way it looks and feels. Would have to change the front fairing bit though Sick

id prefer to have a thrill without riding mega fast. I wd have to ride a vfr750 faster to get a similar thrill.

I still like my rs125, because you get a thrill at lower speeds.

Hi

No real experience of either, but what I would say is that the VFR holds its value far better, while the TRX drops in price like a race horse breaking its leg.

As such for the same kind of money you should be able to find a far better TRX.

All the best

Argh!!!

As I've said before I own a TRX but I was asking for a comparison between the two because I haven't been on a VFR but know TRX very well.

Thankyou for all replys.
Will go test one ASAP.

I would have thought the vfr750 will feel a lot smoother and more powerful than a trx, a bit like an inline 4 600 but not as revvy and more comfy and stable with a quality feel.

I have a VFR750, but ive never tried a TRX, so i cant really compare them.

I can tell you how a VFR is different from an NSR... Rolling Eyes ....but i think you can guess the major differences....

I own two races sv650s and a standard road TRX.

I've stuck some tyres from the SVs onto the TRX in the past.

Engine wise, the TRX has less low down go, but a tad more top end I reckon. Hard to compare as my SVs are geared a fair bit lower and I've never ridden them sedately.
The TRX does need clutch slipping to go in first gear, but when it gets going it's quite nice in my opinion.

Personally, I prefer the riding position of the TRX and would say it's generally nice to ride; got a better seat and the standard ergonomics work for me.

DukeRed:
What about tyres?
I've got a supercorsa front on mine and it turns fine (also stops very well!). It's still not rs250-light, but will lean over fast enough for me with a little coounter steering.

Colinwall:
I've ridden the rs250 a fair distance at points and never found 'flickability' a problem.
Newer design 600s do have pretty decent mid range torque, but do remember they're geared pretty high as well.
