I've heard a lot of people say that this bike is a hooligan machine & possibly a little too much for a road bike, one for the experienced riders only. I've never riden one personnally but I have ridden fast bikes on the road. I remember the first time I got on a 1000cc bike & other riders had almost made me scared with comments like "It'll spit you off" & "You'll never be able to handle that". I found it to be easier to ride than smaller bikes & wondered why I was even scared in the first place. All the hype i've heard about the ZX10R intrigues me, is it really as much of an untameable beast as it's made out to be or is it more scaremongering?? If it really is that insane then should it even be allowed to be a road bike?? I remember reading the R1 booklet thingy & thinking to myself, why exactly does Joe Bloggs really need the new nearly moto GP standard bits & pieces if he intends to ride within the parameters of the law Very Happy Should such machines be made illegal on the road? I definately don't want them to be made illegal coz I fookin love them but how can we be expected not to brake the law with all that power at our disposal. Im sure in America you could probably make a case for suing the manufacturor when you got a ticket for speeding, if they didn't give you the oppourtunity then you wouldn't have done it in the first place???? Thinking

LOL i'm watching it now!! Thats what inspired this rambling. They keep saying "for the experienced riders". WHY?? What exactly classes you as an experienced rider?? Is it time in the seat? Track riding? Machines rode? When are you experienced?

the zx10r is abit of an animal - a friend of mine bought one and now has had his spleen removed after a crash

he has years of riding experience but says he wont go on a bike again.

sure its a superb machine but treat it with respect

When I rode it at first I was like you say bricking it from what people had said. Got on it and it was a total pussy cat.

Its like any machine if you want it to be nice and docile then it is, if you want to nail it and watch the front wheel reach for the sky it definitely does that as well.

Fact is its small and light and has lots of power, how it acts is up to you, but I was going round country lanes on it that I didnt know at 80mph and it not only didnt it feal that fast, the bike was capable of going quicker and staying stuck firm to the damp road.

The only experience i had before riding it was my CBR 6 and a NS125, and considering I've now only been riding for 4 years and I rode it just before it came out over here I wouldnt of said I was an experienced rider.

What caused the crash though?? Was the bike too much for him, was it someone elses fault or just one of those random accidents?

I agree, thats why when new bikers ask me what size bike they should go for I always suggest a 600 or bigger. They nearly all recoil in horror at the very prospect of something bigger than a 400 for a first bike.

People, particularly owners, like to keep the 'its an animal' myth going about their bike, makes them look more 'hardcore' innit. Just the same as people like to put down 'boring' bikes to make themselves feel better about riding an ubersports whatever.

While, as all we enlightened people know, it's more a case of how you use it than what the magazines and man down the pub says.

I had a go of a mates ZXR400 after i'd been riding my Thunderace about. I felt like I was riding a mini moto. The fact that I had to rev the bollocks of it to get any performance meant I was more of an agressive rider doing stupid things and stupid speeds. Didnt like at all................but then I do remember when I thought it was well fast. Laughing

My uncles got a new zx10r and loves it, hes been riding 16 odd years and has had every thing from CG125's to R1's.

Though when he decided to get one it took a few months of carefull decision making as he'd heard all the rumors about it being a widow maker. He's said its a very powerful bike (his does 105 in first I think) but is like every one says its only as powerful as your right hand lets it.

Personally I'd like a new ZX6R. I'm going up to see him at some point on the R6, probably next year now. Should be good!

it is all to do with your right hand i agree......but how much do you trust it Question Twisted Evil

I think the R1 and GSXR would be the same as the zx10r, make the same sort of power just that the zx10r aint as smooth with putting it out.

The ZX10r/ ZX6r are both small bikes, kawakaki's new sports bikes seem really tiny.

I would think that it is the same size as the zx6r

I dont know this particular bike, but I'd agree with those that say a 1 litre sports bike will be perfectly well behaved unless you ask it to be naughty.

I have had an rs125 a year and then did some test rides of variour bikes. Several were 600's but one was a '98 r1 and it was lovely quite easy to ride but precise and with a lot of power at your fingertips. I rode it no faster than I ride my rs125 and there were no problems.

I didnt get it because I could only just afford it and I thought I shd have a 600 before a 1000.

Problems only come a few months down the line when you get a bit over confidant and are tempted to use a bit more of its power than you can handle.

Someone once said about a big bike, 'if you have all that power one day you will want to use it.'

If you are a crazy guy who does practical jokes and such, it might be a bad idea to get a 1000cc bike. If you are a precise control freak who plans everything in meticulous detail then you probably wont do anything silly and so will be ok.

The "real arm"? You mean swinger? It's longer to help put the power down and keep the front on the floor.

ZX10R sensationalism to a point, it helps sell bikes and people like to be scared or talk about the size of their cahoonas. In reality all of the 1000cc machines are within a few bhp of one another, so much so that you wouldn't really notice the difference unless you are very talented or stupid. Obviously the way they deliver their power varies and so does their geometry, every manufacturer has their own idea of what makes a great bike.

Kawasaki have always been renowned for their hard suspension settings, add to that small physical size, power output, low weight and steering geometry and you get something that can "reportedly" be a bit more of a handful on the road than the other bikes in the class. Give someone like Yamaha the same ingredients and you get a more refined road bike like the current R1. Yet the R1 was billed as a totally uncompromising mean machine in it's previous incarnations. Ride it today along side one of the current 1000cc supersports and it probably feels slightly under powered and a bit front end vague but still a ridiculously fast bike.

It's all good for selling magazines and the manufacturers love it.

As far as this group of litre bikes is concerned I can only compare the bike I have now, 1000RR, to the Blades I've owned before. The riding position is slightly more radical in that it's more over the front wheel and the footpegs are higher. There is a definite difference in the power hike and delivery, as in more of it and everywhere, but it's still equally as useable. Braking power and feeling are different with the radial setup, TBH probably no discernable improvement for me over the previous setup. The extra power and refinement from the engine do make it easier to be travelling a lot faster than you think, especially when you look down setting up for a corner and realize exactly how much speed you are carrying. The bike is harder to ride in the winter, whether this is due to the extra power, handling characteristics, suspension setup, etc, I'm not sure. I do know that it is easy to end up on the floor after spinning up the rear than it was before. Otherwise the bike is a perfectly capable all rounder, it's refined and it does what it's told.

I would imagine that it's more or less the same story for the others in the class too. Like any bike, buy the one you want just don't be an idiot with it.
