I have been having problems starting my ZXR 750 since I bought it, the alternator belt broke just after the test ride and was replaced prior to me picking the bike up again.

The engine will only turn for a few goes before the battery is dead! Even after riding for a while, if I stop and restart the engine, the turn over is very weak, or non existent.

I have noticed a squealing noise (like a tight fab belt on a car) when riding, then it disappears, however, this morning riding in the fast lane at 70mph, there were several loud back fires from the exhaust and I lost all power and electrics

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to any body?

Could the squealing be a tight or incorrectly tensioned altenator belt?

Could jump starting from a car have caused problems?

Why would I loose all power whilst riding?

Because the alternator isn't putting out any or very little charge.

If it's still under warranty from where you had it take it back, they obviously ballsed up in their repairs or the thing was no good to start with.

Don't know the finer details of your bike but has it actually got an alternator belt Confused I think you've been stiffed somewhere along the line. Thumbs Down

Doesn't sound like a major problem, its sounds like its just the charging thats not working.

If you loose power (electrical) then you'll loose the fuel pump etc... so it will stop. After your breakdown, are you getting any lights when you switch it on (neutral - Oil)?

Check all the fuses, and if you can get it started, check the voltage across the battery when its running and when its not.

Thumbs Up

backfiring is usually ignition, so defo an electrical prob. As has been suggested, it is probably your alternator that is up the spout.

I'd guess at alternator or reg/rec problem. There is no alternator belt, they are lying if that's what they told you. Check all the fuses, if you can get it running, check the voltage across the battery terminals when revving the engine. It should be above 14.5V at any point.

Cheers

What model ZXR is it?
If it,s a H1/H2 it does have an alternator belt. One problem with them is,if the bike is stood for any time, rust can gather on the small "V" notches on the pulleys, the roughness rips the belt.
The reg/rec unit is inside the actual alternator.
The squealing noise could well be the belt adjustment.

any use? Thumbs Up

A little while after pulling over, and even today, the oil, neutral and main lights are working.

Hopefully it is a simple charging problem.

Gonna get it serviced or checked in next few days

Thanks for all advice Very Happy

No, go back and say your bike is still fudged after they've "repaired" it.

Dont let them off with a shit job, mate. You dont deserve it as a paying customer, and if they get away with that stuff often, then the garage will try it on with others too.

Take it back and complain [in the nicest possible way, natch Wink]
