Well, I'll try keep this short!

A month ago I had a pretty bad crash, A van pulled out infront of me and I broke my Femur straight in two. I had surgery and had a metal rod put straight down the middle, they said it will probably never come out. After that it was 5 fucking unbearbale days in hospital, people came to visit but I've not felt so lonely EVER.

I still want to ride bikes but I keep thinking what if I have to go back to hospital and stay even longer? or what if I have a worse crash and can't walk? It's ruined one of my only passions in life.

I was wondering if anybody on here has been in this situation? do you think I should move to cars? <<< controversial, sorry to whinge, this isn't an attention whoring attempt.

stick with what you like mate accidents can happen in cars or bikes a car your neck would prob be snapped if u hit a van. ive had an accidet like that on a push bike snapped both wrists got pins and stuff in them didnt stop me. accidents are apart of driving/riding.

TBH

I still want to ride bikes

theres your answer, we all ride bikes because we love the feeling, encluding the risks and that is part of it. after you have had a bad crash things are going to be shot to shit but if you want to do something you will do it again, it will be scary at first but slowly it will gradually get frighting and you will love it again. just so long as its something that you want to do again you will get through it!
after a very fast off i was shitting it every time i touched the brake but slowly i got used to riding and am almost back to now i was, but saying that i only had minor injuries and didn't have the physical pain you went through.
also i think some of your concern is due to the fact that the accident wasn't your fault and there is nothing that you could have done about it, ok in the same situation in a car you probibly woudn't have come off so bad but at the end of the day pain and death can creep up on us in so many ways and this time you got pain whos to say the death won't come for you slipping over in the shower?
anyway hope that your recovery is as painless as possible and you at least ride a bike again just to give it a try! Thumbs Up

Accidents are accidents, I could come to grief and break things in a car just the same as a bike. I've spent some time in hospital and it was deathly boring rather than lonely. I suppose that time depends on whether you're used to spending time on your own or not really. The fact that my wrist is pinned is inconsequential now, but now is 18 months later. A month after your crash, I'd be surprised if you were even out of plaster/ traction/ whatever. Give it more time and you'll come back to biking.

Bones, muscles and skin all mend. Scars are just blemishes with a story. Who knows, someone could knock you over with a car tomorrow and kill you. Life is for living, for enjoying yourself in. Live it, enjoy yourself, keep biking. Thumbs Up

If it's big enough, the bone breaks at each end of the rod rather than the bone snapping in the middle.

thank you guys, I was hoping for a response like this!

I will get back on a bike, lets hope I can enjoy it as much as I did before!

I've thought about an impact on the same leg again, that was one of my main worries! I'll speak to my doctor next time about it.

You do heal, and every smack makes you more aware how vulnerable you are, which is NOT a bad thing.

No car driver is going to stop me biking, in fact I made enough money in compensation from one prat who didn't know what an indicators for that I got a better bike (and a bust jaw, trashed knee, dislocated thumb etc etc etc) But that was 15 years ago and I'm healed.

The trick is to get back on as soon as you can. I broke my collarbone ice skating on two wheels once, after 5 weeks I was riding again. Must have looked strange to anyone watching when I got off and put my arm back in its sling.

Just remember, when car drivers see a bike they see a threat to their own sense of power over the road, and they WILL get in your way (or be on their mobile).

Just throttle back and finger salute a bye bye

Im back on a bike after my accident- i couldnt wait to get back on one.

In my current state, one fall and ill probably die- but i dont care.

The risk of injury is small compared with my love of bikes. And im a bit mad too! Wink

If you ever get unsure about riding, dont use the bike for as long as you can without missing it. If you miss it, ride it Cool

Glad you've decided to get back on. I came off my bike a year ago, had 8 weeks off work because of it. I had a hole in my elbow and my wrist would lock up anytime it felt like it. I got back on a bike after 4 weeks. I thought about giving up, but i couldn't do it. Bikes are part of who i am. Take away the bikes from my life and i'd probably kill myself.

There are many people who have sustained worse injuries and are back on bikes. Check out this site https://www.nabd.org.uk/ and read some of the stories in there. Shaun works with a guy who has his own story on that site. He lost his arm if i remember right.

Ive not put this site up here to shock you, just to show you and others that feel the same way that it is possible if you love your bikes.

Hope this helps somehow.

I am assuming that you have got a solicitor involved? I ask cos I had a similar accident ( injuries have healed) and I too had doubts and I mentioned this to my solicitor and he got me what they call "cognitive behaviour therapy" and his insurers had to pay.
It was the best thing I did even though I had reservations, thought it involved electrodes to my testicles etc. It made me think about things entirely different for example the chances of it happening again are minimal etc etc. It is something worth persuing and it adds to your claim Thumbs Up

I've got plates and screws in my forearm, and a 3" screw in my left shoulder from my accident last year. Very nearly lost my arm altogether, spent 9 hours in surgery and they nearly didn't manage it.

Hasn't put me off bikes at all, I was riding my little 125 about 2 months later when the cast was off, then I went and did my test and bought a ZXR400. I wouldn't let it put you off, the more you think about it the worse you'll get, just get back on the bike and you'll soon realise why you love them so much. I thought about giving it all up when I was in hospital, but when I got back on my bike it made me realise why I love bikes.

I dont know you, but chin-up dude... There are people out there who cant ride anymore. People out there who are dead - and would give anything for another thrash around some twisties. They cant do it, but you can - and if you want to do it - what holds you back? I'm not on about people that have died on bikes either - people that died of something else!

Like mchaggis said - you could slip on something, have your knee give way, and end up getting your head run over by a bus because you fell over sideways into the road from the pavement - you just never know. Or you could step out the bath, slip, and give yourself brain damage. What about rushing down some stairs when you're late, slipping, and breaking both your legs? or breaking your neck?

You might be lonely dude - but you've got us on here man

I felt like that when I broke 3 ribs on my KMX125 many years ago, they still hurt now, I was 19 now I am 35.

My dad picked me up from hospital on his motorbike, and took me everywhere I wanted to go on it, until I'd healed up enough to be able to kick the starter.

I was very nervous at first, but glad now, that I got back on so soon, I think it'd been harder to ride a bike again after a longer break.

A bloke l used to work with called paul crashed while drag racing about 10y ago and had a simular injury to yours and was fitted with a titinum bar in his right leg runing from the knee to the ankle (you could see it under the skin Sick ), he was told by the doctors that if the leg was injuryed again he would most likey lose the leg (breaks at the top of the bar) so he gave up drag racing and road riding.
