It was a bit more than I expected. Do you lot think its a fair price or a bit steep ? (TT600)

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/colinwall/P1010150.jpg

Ive got all the bits (only 3).

At that price I'm tempted to bodge it myself with the help of previous threads on plastic welding but if I ever sell it, it might be better to have it done properly now, I guess.

Anyone know of other places in the West Midlands other than Arnolds Fairing Repairs ?

Is that gold encrusted gaffa tape you're using?

LOL at gold encrusted gaffa tape Laughing

I'd check out ebay and get one off there. I bet it'd be cheaper.

I am tempted to do a duct tape on the inside repair but the bits wd probably fall off and I'd then lose them. So I could superglue it and try plastic welding ( but this means I wont be able to have it fixed properly later).

The ebay waiting game is a good idea. I have seen side fairings on there for about £50 so I guess its just a matter of time before I see a front fairing.

I might go back to the bloke and say someone says they can do it for £75, could you do it for £70.

So what wd be a reasonable price for a repair like this ?

If you get it plastic welded your gonna have to get it filled n resprayed too..... (from my memory)

Would be tempted to do it myself as a soldering iron is perfectly good for stitching the panels back together and then some P38 filler in the grooves some sanding down then the painting is probably the most akward bit....

i dont know about costs for this kind of repair tho so cant really help there

Try Bike Medic to see if there is a local franchise in your area, they're very good, dunno how much but they would give you a price.

Glass fibre mat with resin works pretty well for repairs, just it sets pdq. So well in fact that I never noticed the repair on the headlamp fairing on my bike until I saw the inside. Embarassed The crack on the outside is almost invisible. Sand it down and paint over and it would be invisible.

Wouldn't worry about the selling it aspect, most buyers are going to presume it's been seriously crashed due to the absence of fairing and tank decals.

Just get one on ebay if one shows up.

I've repaired a front cowl that was in 3 pieces with a soldering iron. Make sure ALL the paint is remove from the front and back of the area and any glue is removed too, you will need some donor plastic (it has to be the same type of plastic)

Im in the midlands, you are in cumbria so a bit far I think.

Thnx for advice guys.
particularly
zxr400er's verdict on price
bendy's that buyers wd know its had some damage anyway
and the glass fibre mat vs plastic welding advice

Im tempted to fix it in place with super glue, and duct tape on the back hoping vibration wont shake bits loose. I might replace the duct tape with glass fibre matt with resin. I think I will not bother trying to get the crack invisible for the moment and see if something turns up on ebay.

I shd probably give some breakers a ring too but I expect they would want £150 or more for a front fairing.

Im glad I bought one that has been damaged before as it wd have been worse if I had bought a mint one.

I'd say that was a bargain for a professional job tbh.

Hi

For a full pro job it is probably a touch high, but then he is having to source paint, etc, for a small job. Presume it includes stickers and the like.

However while it is certainly true that you can bodge it up yourself with fibre glass matting (and the stuff is very strong), or do some crude plastic welding it is also worth noting that you can probably halve the bill from Arnolds Fairings if you just get him to do the plastic welding and not do the paint.

All the best

Keith

For the true bodge I use araldite, thin layer in the crack then layer it on about 1mm thick on the back and bam it's almost stronger than new. Only downside is it takes a while to dry but nothing a hairdryer cant help with.

Superglue is very brittle and it wont last 2mins with the vibrations.
