quick question

if valve clearances needed doing on an engine would they tick while the engine is cold or when the engine is warmed up, as my mates engine on his nc30 ticks while the engine is warmed up but not while the engine is cold or first stared up.

Valve clearances are largest when cold, as everything expands when it gets hotter. Hence if it isn't there when cold and is there when hot, it is unlikely to be the valve clearances.
