Hi, as a few people keep asking me this question i thought i would quickly post this statement for all to view.

If you take a restricted motorcycle test which resists you to 33bhp for 2 years, you STILL CAN NOT ride a derestricted RS125, Mito etc. legally and your insurance cover will be void in the event of accident and vehicle inspection

To legally ride a derestricted Aprilia RS125 you would need to pass a Direct access test, or be past your 2 year restriction
Many Thanks

Sorry, i really should have put why? D'oh

The law states that the vehicle must be under 33bhp - which the RS is even if derestricted.

BUT, the power to weight ratio must also be under a certain amount.
and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg

An RS makes a power to weight of 0.265W/KG

due to the weight of an RS, the power to weight ratio is too high. Hence making it not legal.

Pretty sure they only make 30bhp derestricted. I think most people with the restricted licence don't bother, i know mine are coming out when the weather clears up Very Happy

Assuming a weight of around 120kg, any more than 26hp is illegal on a restricted licence. (source, a certain amount of arithmetic and using my fingers).

That's correct...but if and when they ever go to weigh the bike then it's not going to be anywhere near it's dry weight as it'll have oil and fuel in there...plus some ballast if required. Shifty

when i was 19 and had a 1996 RS125 Silver colour scheme. Simple derestriction. Made 32.4 bhp on dyno run as standard then 33.9 with an arrow can - not really worth it for the £275 it cost back then.

BUT, my flatmate has a 2002 rs125 gp1 which again got derestricted and slapped on the dyno and made only 27bhp.

Why has the bhp dropped so much in the new models, and please dont say for reliablity. ive had 4 pre1999 rs's and never even had to press the starter twice on any of them. My flat mate spends more time off his then on it due to poor running etc.

Hi

All depends on whose figures for weight and power you use, and whether that power figure is at the back wheel or the crank and whether it is a wet or dry figure.

Aprilia do not claim 33hp for the RS125 (never seen them claim any power figure for a full power RS125, the RS came out after quoting 125 power figures became politically incorrect in Italy). Best I have seen from a road test dyno is 28.5hp, but that is the early bikes with the larger carb. Probably knock 3hp or so off for the later ones with the smaller carb, and more again for the latest ones with a fairly restrictive exhaust.

Dry weight Aprilia claimed was 115kg. Weight quoted on the frame plates on some of them (presume wet weight) is 140kg (and for example the 2001 owners handbook quotes the "Weight ready for starting" at 139kg. Working on that basis they can have a shade over 30hp and be legal for someone who has just passed their test.

All the best

Keith

A lot depends on the dyno operator. Quite easy for them to apply a correction factor to make the graph look good. There is a common one floating around the web for a lightly modified RS producing 36hp, but if you look carefully it says the correction factor is 1.2. So it only made 30hp and the rest is a bodge factor (possibly to compensate for weather conditions, more likely just to make it look impressive to the owner given how extreme it is).

All the best

Keith

I didnt know that. i did and still believe that the dyno testers made the graph better than it probably was - PDQ are quite respectable though so hopefully not to increased. Unfortunately theres no correction figures stated on my print outs from back then. It was useful to sell the rs to Marco Motorcyles in Nottingham though.

Hi

Well, as an example my RS125 should be mechanically the same as yours (mine is a 1993 one, 34mm carb, Rotax 123 engine). In the PB road test they made 28.5hp. So 4hp more from yours as standard seems a bit hopefull.

The later bikes (certainly a 2002 model) have a smaller carb (28mm rather than 34mm) and are (I think) detuned a touch to use lower octane fuel. Added to which it might well have an exhaust with a cat stuffed up the inside (depending on when it was made and for which market). As such they will be down on power. The loss of ~5hp from these 2 dyno runs is probably about right for that.

All the best

Keith
