Following on from Darrenh's thread, how often do you have those oh shit Shocked moments on a ride?

Im not talking about a full on life or death, but certainly say, a write off and a hospital visit.

I'd say 1 in 4 rides, maybe even 1 in 3. A lot I suppose but I do tend to push myself to my limits.

Only once in a while, if you are having them regularly then you are doing something wrong and will most probably come to grief very soon.

Do you ride within your limits? or right on the edge?

I ride on the edge, in the right conditions, and sometimes not in the right conditions Shocked . I get the biggest buzz from getting myself in a situation and having the skill to get myself out of it again.

Getting faster and faster is what makes it fun for me, having the reactions, the pyhisical and mental agilty to ride my bike to the absolute limit.

That what makes it fun, but with big fun comes big risk.

I was ok in and around town when riding a ER5 (DAS), bit nervous about counter steering and leaning bike round corners.

Now have sports bike, totally different, am shit scared about everything Crying or Very sad

I am waiting for gracious tarmac slide around the slightest bend or round about. Just haven't got the confidence to ride aggressively so every ride is a brown trousers affair Exclamation

I had a moment today riding with the SE guys. Went into a very tight left hander a bit hot. Maybe a year ago I would have stood it up and braked going into the other lane Confused but I've got used to just leaning it further instead.

Ididn't think "Oh sh!t" I just thought I hope I have enough grip as the road was damp.

I generally ride within mine and my bikes limits (R6). Everyone rides close to and right on the edge at times but for me riding my bike isn't about going everywhere at the limit or right on the edge. I don't want to die and as you get older and see what happens to people around you, you realise that you are not quite as invincible as you thought when you were when you were seventeen. I don't want to sound grown up and boring but as life goes on and other responsibilities come along then you have to adapt the way you live to do the right thing by others. Don't get me wrong, I still go out and thrash my bike, ride to places like the Assen MotoGP for the laugh/experience, but there is a time and a place for riding on the edge, and the more you do it the more chance you have of ending up another statistic.

Completely agree with you there. I wouldn't class myself as a youngster, but not an oldie either!

I've often thought to myself when things have gone tits up at home, sod it, i'll go out for a thrash on my bike. Thankfully I never have taken that ride because it would prob be my last ever one.

If I died on my bike, well, I suppose it would be the way i'd want to go. Better than dieing of cancer or AIDS I suppose.
But that would be selfish, it would be the people left behind that would have to deal with it. My parents burying their son, the GF without soulmate and the kids without a father. Confused

i have two or three "oh sh1t" moments a week.

thats anywhere between 10 and 20 journeys and its usually because of other road users as i don't really take too many chances myself.

Almost never, perhaps once a year. I used to have more years ago, I ride faster now than I did then, I suppose I just recognise nowadays that there's a time and a place.

You want to take it a bit easier BN, it's only a matter of time before you become a statistic if you're having moments that often. It's not skill or lack of that'll get you, it's being tripped up by an unpredictable influence, bit of damp or diesel, something running out in front of you. When it happens (and it will) you may be lucky and get off with a damaged bike and some bruising, you could just as easily end up head on with a truck and be wiped out in an instant. If you crave thrills like that when riding, go club racing and get far bigger thrills in a controlled environment!

I've had maybe 4 or 5.

Once overtaking a bus on a bend. Once overtaking a car then realising a bike is coming. Once overtaking 6 cars (big bugger off rock on the road, more like a blimmin brick) and a few over cooking corners.

Overtaking is the main weakness of many that I posess hence why I usually ride fairly sedately. Smile

Either or TBH. I feel great afterwards either way.

I generally ride about 10 percent under my limits, to give me a little margin for error, so works quite well.

There's nothing like a few falls to knock common sense into most people. I have had about 5 or 6 in the last 15 years (mainly when I was still a kid). Each crash made me ride more carefully. I still push it to my limits when I feel like, but I am more careful about the time and place. The trick is having the good fortune to avoid serious injury or death in your first crash.

about once a month.
Observation is the key, many of my oh shit moments usually end up in a second oh shit on the floor.

Had one with Tom (Dodsi) the other day. It was dusk and he was in front on his latest bike (a zx6r if you care to keep track of them all) overtaking a long line of cars. I saw a cyclist on the other side of the road and a car coming the other way further down the road. Thinking that the car would have to pull out to pass the cyclist I move into the line of cars.......... Tom doesn't Shocked

Worse is that he's riding along past them all smack bang in the centre of the other lane at well over the ton. (We were averaging 110 most of the trip Embarassed ). I was quite literally shouting in my helmet

"errrr Tom.... you might want to move in now"

Nothing..

"errrr Tom!!!... You REALLY might want to move in now"

Still Nothing

"CHRIST TOM!!! FOR F**KS SAKE MOVE IN!!"

Finally the rear tail light of his bike leapt up into the air as he does a stonking stoppie and he swerves in just in time!!

Later on I found out that Tom saw the cyclist but not the oncoming car. The light was failing, it was grey and didn't have it's lights on. He showed is inexperience there by not watching out for cars without lights on, and knowing Tom he was probably aiming to flash past the cyclist and give him a shock Rolling Eyes. (secret Twisted Evil on my part as i would have done the same if the conditions were right!...)

Worse was the car didn't even hit its horn or flash it's lights so it hadn't seen him either!

Still it's all part of the fun!

I tend to have more over winter because of the slippy road surface. Usually I have an 'oh shit' moment at least once a week in the summer, etc.

Used to be every few rides, hopefully better now I've got a new tyre and won't be sliding around everywhere. It's usually more going towards kerbs/sliding sideways on corners than problems with other traffic with me, because the bike doesn't like the current conditions. Totally my fault, I know, I just don't push it as hard now, and toutch wood, the incident rate has gone down now.

I do have a lot of incidents with cars almost getting me, as does anyone (I think Confused ) but I'm a lot more observant now, since my accident. Just don't trust ANY car on the road and ride like that, too! If I hadn't had the accident, which woke me up a bit, I'd have had an accident afterwards because I wasn't looking for other vehicles as much as I am now.

Jon
