It started again on my little Chinese machine, and a good dollop of Redex squirted through the carb at a high idle didn't fix it like it apparently did last time. I'm wondering if the soot in the cylinder, exhaust and spark plug is a symptom rather than a cause.

My mum's CG125 has no problems at speed, so I had a look at the CG125 ignition, and while the spark isn't big, fat and blue, it is a lot more energetic than the Hongdou's. The spark on my Hongdou is a scrawny little yellowy white thing. I've tried a new spark plug and it is the same.

I have also noticed smudgy black marks on the insulation on the Hongdou spark plug, which makes me wonder if it is the HT lead or perhaps the CDI? I've tried the spark plug caps from both machines on both machines, and the CG seems to produce a more healthy spark in both cases. Therefore I'm not sure that it is the plug cap which is dodgy, though the rubber is starting to perish on the Hongdou.

The horn, lights et al are fine on both machines, and they both normally start without a fuss, so I doubt it is the battery, though it could be.

Any ideas? Thinking

Fuel, sparks, filters, nothing of the sort.

All my problems were in fact caused by a loose connection on the ignition coil. Rolling Eyes The only reason I discovered this was because today it wasn't sparking at all. The rich running was simply because it wasn't running properly at all. Brick Wall
