Right, I thought I'd sorted my ide speed problem out. But it appears not!

Every time I come to a stop, the bike dies. I've located the idle screw, but the manual says I should adjust this when the engine is hot? When the engine's hot, it's burning my hand! So I can't really adjust it easily.

Does anyone know, if I am looking at the idle screw from the RIGHT side of the bike, which direction I should turn it to increase the idle speed?

I also think that I will put the legal can back on, I have a feeling this isn't helping matters, oh and it's too damn loud for early morning.

Thanks for your help as usual. Smile Thumbs Up

Right?? my idle screw is on the left side of the bike, it's a plastic knob that sticks out above the carbs you don't burn your hand. Thought all Bandits were like that, you screw it in clockwise to increase idle

Hmm, very odd.

This is apparantly the idle screw. But it seems to be under the carbs?

No reason you can't screw it in 1/4 turn when it's cold then see what it's like when it's hot then take it from there.
It's not that stiff so isn't hard to turn unless yours has seized a bit, you could use a pair of pliers lightly on it to do it when it's hot. Never realised the Gen 1 Bandits were so awkward, Gen 2 are dead easy.

Well,

I think I've sorted it. Let the bike warm up for 10 minutes. Then used the adjuster. Didn't do very much, so I adjustted the tension and the throttle, I think the cables must have been a bit slack. That would also explain why it is a bit slow off the lights etc...

Thanks for all your help guys! Much appreciated! Thumbs Up

There is supposed to be a"small" amount of slack in a throttle cable, you are not really supposed to adjust idle speeds by "tightening the cable"-if thats what you did ....idle should be adjusted mechanically at carburettors.. Question
Gary

ps hope that didn't sound patronising. Smile

He's only going by the book as Suzuki quote "No Free Movement" for the throttle tension, saying that I ignore it and put just a touch in rather than have it like an on/off light switch.

I agree with you Bezzer I used to set up my montesa like that but on full lock it used to raise the idle because the cable was too tight.. Embarassed

I think it was a combination of the two. When I went to ride hoem after work, I tweaked with the idel adjuster and the revs dropped again. The reason I adjusted the play was that it was taking a good 100mm turn before I got enough power to get going at a reasonable pace.

I'm still not 100% convinced, but it's running and not a lot I can do until the weekend when I can work on it in the light. I think I'll be replacing the legal can at the weekend until I can spare the cash for a dyno jet kit and the time (and knowledge) to set it up properly.

Cheers for all your comments tho, has been nice to know I'm not on my own lol!

Try running the bike without the air filter, see if that helps?
