Hi

Have a feeling there are very few rules on what would be road legal. Getting a completly new bike registered could be difficult, but once registered there are few restrictions (basic rules on it being safe, such as minimum lighting, etc).

Insurance is a different kettle of fish. Minor change and they will not care too much about it, but swapping in a totally different engine would probably result in the need for an engineers report and most companies would probably still tell you to get stuffed.

All the best

Keith

That will help you when it comes to re-registering the bike with the new engine and as for insuring it as long as you make clear on the phone what the bike is and the size of the engine they will probably simply insure you for the price it would have been for the bike the engine was originally in, for example I have been quoted for a zxr400 with a zzr600 engine and it was roughly the same price as a zzr600 bike, they tend to simply go on engine size rather than other aspects of the bike.
hope this helps Dan Thumbs Up
