Hey guys,

Just wondering what you're supposed to do if you come behind a funeral procession? I had to overtake on this morning and now feel really bad about it.

That's what I was so confused, I never been told what to do in these circumstances.

It was travelling about 10 mph, so I used a high gear and low revs to overtake.

It depends. I don't overtake them out of respect.

I think if you trickle by on a dual carriageway then that would be okay but screeming past on a small road might be out of order.

It's a personal thing.

Generally and seems to be an unwritten rule for 4 wheelers that you join the back of the queue sort of as a mark of respect. This is probably because they can't filter past anyway, but that's what seems to happen.

I have gone flying down the outside of a procession in the past though. I didn't realize what it was, thought "what's going on with all this really slow moving traffic", got pissed off, hammered down the outside, got a couple of cars from the front then saw what was going on. Shocked I sort of pretended to tip my hat as I went past as a mark of respect. Rolling Eyes

To be honest you only have two options in an over take

Option one
Just as you did do a nice slow low rev over take leaving the maximum room possible and in doing so show some respect for the grief of the funeral party.

Option two
On the Back wheel revving the nuts off it before dropping to a stopei and the fucking off at very high speed.

Problem is both can cause offence but the bonus with option two is you would be making so much noise you will be unable to hear any complaints.

P.S. I would take option one myself

I've passed 3 in the past few months. I just stayed behind it untill i came the the next street and then took a detour around it to get somewhat infront of it, which doesn't take long because it's moving slowly.

If you were in the box would you want people to overtake?

Well your not in a position to be offended are you.

Anyway, I would overtake them.
I would'nt mind my funeral procession being overtaken (not that I would let my death cause inconvenience to other road users, just dump my body in the back garden for all I care) as it would be an obstuction.

As long as you are not screaming past shouting "glad he's dead" then I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

I think its ok as long as both wheels are touching the ground, so to speak.

If you do it in a very deliberate way, ie other lane, get level with the hearse, nod, and steadily accelerate off i think thats more then respectful enough.

Im not going to sit behind a 10mph procession as im sure they dont want a noisy biker revving behind them anymore then they want one flying past them.

I will probably be in quite a few boxes or an urn depending on what way I go. Wink Then I don't care anyway.

This is what I do. It shows that you need to get somewhere but that you still respect the grief of the mourners.

A moto GP race could overtake me as far as I'm concerned. I'd be taken up with screaming my nips off at the prospect of being buried alive.

I did this once on the way to my friends a while ago. Saw a queue of traffic and the other lane was clear so i raced down there rinsed it passed 3 black limos and saw loads of horses and shit. I realised what had happened so i stopped on the white line. Loads of cars came towards me beeped finger up etc. I felt really bad, managed to get into a back street and was trying to get back on the road further ahead up but kept meeting the horses and stuff again. Confused

If that was me i would want every bike wheelieing past me. Cool

If i was in the box i wouldnt give a shit... cos id be dead.

Random collection of dead/dying cells about to go back into the nitrogen/carbon cycles through decomposition.

If a biker wants to continue his sunday morning blast with a smile on his face let him. I mean jesus.

Only people who would care are those mourning, and you no it.

Therefore the more pertinent question would be, 'if your mum/dad/spouse was in the box would you want people to overtake?'
And to that id say yes or no, i dont mind, aslong as they were respectful. Sitting behind bibbing and revving is FAR worse then zipping past IMO

Yes sorry once I am dead I am dead and don’t give a flying fuck about any thing any more

Now if I was burying a loved one I would appreciate any marks of respect for my grief but I wouldn’t feel insulated or aggrieved if people just go on with there life’s as lets face it that’s just what the person in the box would be doing if they could.

No I would not ever overtake a funeral procession, not never.

On my way to work is a crematorium and I am always stopping etc,
sometimes I stop for a while to let all cars turn right, i've stopped on a roundabout as well.

No its not the done thing overtaking them round here.

Personally I think so long as your not being a twat when you go past no harm no foul.

I figure it this way the guy in the box has run his race and has plenty of time on his/her hands. Me on the other hand has a finite amount of time left on this planet and Im afraid I dont know exactly how long thats gonna be. So sorry but Im going to make the most of it.

I would only do it if it wsa dual lane or similar. Im certainly not crossing into oncoming to get there.

As for the nod, not sure I would feel it was my place to do that when going past. Would depend on my mood at the time.

Kinda like when someone dies and complete strangers feel the need to say sorry. Its not like they had anything to do with it so why be sorry. Sometimes I think the motivation is right but the outcome can often be perceived as offensive.
Best to keep to yourself.

apart from the obvious feelings of the family why do we feel the need to respect the dead when most of the time we don't respect the living?

surely if we had that respect going before we actually died the world might be a nicer place...

Bit off topic, what would happen if somebody crashed into the hearse etc?

I know the chances of it happening are pretty slim but it must of happened somewhere?

I've seen a broken down hearse before. I passed just as the coffin was being loaded into the recovery hearse.
Confused

We used to move the Transit vans for a big funeral directors a few years ago. They used to collect from the hospital mortuary, the times they used to breakdown with a full load onboard!

I think the worst one we ever had, was a hearse of theirs that set fire outside the family`s house with the coffin on board.

Apparently, you`ve never seen undertakers move so fast to get the coffin out! Laughing Laughing
