Hi,

Have been a bit of a tit and used a brillo sponge to get the textile off of my exhaust pipe,

Only problem is is that it's now scratched to buggery and starting to rust.

There is also rust on the:

Wheels (Front/Back)
Rear right shock
Brake Footpeg

The bike is kept outside, uncovered if I am lazy and this is probably a reason why its rusting so bad...

Anyone got any advice for getting rid of this rust?

I will be selling it when I've passed my test too, and the money I get from it will be paying for my new bike, so obviously I have to repair as much of it as possible.

Damage that needs fixing is:

Brake lever is scuffed
Headlight casing is warped
Footpeg rubber is eroded

Is it worth repairing these for resale?

I am fucking gutted I crashed it, it was mint beforehand and I'm pretty upset that I seemed to have turned it into a bit of a shitter in 5 months.

Toby

Hi Toby,

Sounds like you have discovered the magic formula of motorcycling:

5 year old bike + 1 winter = knackered

For what it's worth, it's the road salt that's killing your bike.

There's absolutely nothing you can do about the lifting chrome on the exhaust - it will just get worse and worse. The good news is that if it's the original honda exhaust, it will probably still function for a while yet, even though it will look like crap.

Handy hint for future reference - if you absolutely MUST put something abrasive to chrome plating, use schrunched up aluminium foil.

The wheels, you should probably treat the rust best you can using chemical products and then laquer them before the rusting accelerates.

For everything else, well, that's what smooth black hameritte and ebay were invented for.

finpos.

A tube of Autosol doesn't cost an awful lot, and all that's needed otherwise is a cloth and a load of elbow grease. A wire brush and smooth black hammerite is pretty much essential for keeping rusting steel frames in check.

How many 125's have you seen without scratches or scrapes? Mine would makes training school 125s look shameful if it wasn't so easy to mend and difficult to damage properly.

iv had my cg a year now, it was new when i got it, the wheels and the front of the exhaust are badly rusted, i spent about 5 hours cleaning them recently with a wire brush, it actually worked well as i was careful and it didnt leave to many marks, i used chrome cleaner (cant remember name) to shine it up.
went out in the rain two days later and the rust was back! my idea now is just to keep the worst of it,
