PostPosted: 22:09 - 12 Mar 2012    Post subject: Girls/Women and Bikes? Reply with quote

My boyfriend had been the one who suggested to me that I should join one or two bike forums, as he said they can be some of the best places to find out almost anything you need to know about bike issues, i.e. someone somewhere will know the answer, or how to go about finding it. So I joined here, and a dedicated Ninja site (because I have a ZX6R).
Anyway, when I joined, I did wonder just how much biking groups/forums/organisations may have moved on from the traditional stereotypical views most of society have in their mind's eye? I did also wonder whether girls/women are more accepted as being part of the whole biking scene now, or whether we are tolerated, but the guys secretly would rather we stayed at home away from the rough and tumble boy's stuff?
So, I thought rather than wonder........I'd ask you all the question.
Girls/Women and Bikes, should they in your view (if you are male that is) all be in the same sentence?

This is a pic of my and my friend Anna's Ninjas side by side:

Its never been an issue and never will be...

... Except when girls make a big thing of it. "Look at me, I'm a girl in a mans world!"

One might argue that naming oneself "ScotsLass" and then starting a thread about the very subject might well be going a long way to doing that.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Most modern day "feminism" is simply habit or an illusion really. Its now bordering on religion.

Stupid question - everyone knows there aren't actually any real women on the interwebs, let alone riding bikes.

Thumbs Up

No problem with girl bikers as long as they get the teas/beers in when it's their turn at the cafe/pub.
Oh and they don't sound like one of the boys.... (Maybe I am a bit of a sexist though.)

Its an odd thread. I cant really see how gender relates into riding a motorcycle.

In my experience girls like the idea of bike and biking but are unprepared for the reality. They are usually too short for bikes, don't like safety deciding what they have to wear, they like the idea of going fast but then the actual speed scares the shit out of them. They mostly seem caught up in the looks and style of a bike rather than the getting wet and having everyone try to kill you or steal you bike aspect of things. Sure men do this too, which is why most of the guys i ever have tell me their getting a bike, 60% of them i think will never do it and are unprepared for the realities of it. With women it's more like 90%.

I and i think the vast majority of bikers would welcome more female bikers, especially ones willing to get their hands dirty with some real mechanical experience and enthusiasm.

Sure there are a few racers around (elena rosell, jenny tinmouth) but as with F1 these seem to be a novelty act for generating sponsor interest rather than people who have got to their position through exceptional talent. Which is a shame as a bigger talent pool could only be better for racing.

So i think almost everyone is in favour of more girly bikers, we're just a bit sceptical from past expirence Laughing

You are cruisin' fur a bruisin pal..

Wimin worry about wot gear to wear coz most of the gear is made for blokes WHO WORRY ABOUT WOT GEAR TO WEAR.

Bikes are not too big for girls.
Not too fast.
And the weather is not too harsh for girls.

It is a male dominated area and it may be difficult for girls to get into it. Unless they have a bloke as a friend/hubby/brother to introduce them.

I see more girls on bike these days. Onenthing bikes are more reliable so there is not so much need for manly teck know how.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have to admit the corners still scare me a bit, so most men will be faster on a bike than me, and for sure will be on corners.
Still, I have a bike, and I really enjoy riding it (isn't that what it should be about?). I do hope never to come off it and hurt myself badly, so maybe I'm not facing up to the reality of what could happen. However, that must apply to many a man as well though.

And in my experience you are talking shit. Walloper has made some cracking points but I just felt the need to add that.

Seeing as though my earlier question was ignored, I'll ask again... What are you trying to achieve with this thread?

There is still some sexism around in the biking world it's just not as rife as it used to be, I know Bella got some sort of negative comment from a bloke running a stand at the NEC last year.

Conversely the girl I went with was treated very well at the Get On stand and scored several freebies from stands on account of having a vagina.

However, a lot of girls that come into the scene do come in with the "I'm a girl in a male dominated scene, look" type of attitude which does nothing but assist in making themselves feel different to the blokes who just do it.

It's a free world, so your opinion is as valid as anyone else's here. However, I did aim the post at men, but sorry if that got your back up Rolling Eyes
All I'm hoping to gain is mostly a light hearted thread of replies.........I'm not aiming to stir anything up, which is what I suspect you think Lozzypop1? Confused
