Spent a few hours in the garrage rewiring the front of the bike, spent ages soldering and fiddleing and got it working, turn the bars and the lights all go out! (took ages to work out what the hell was going on)

Figured out roughtly the area and which wire it is but its hard to say just where the break is...

i'm guessing it got mauled when some scalleys tryed to seal the bike but couldn't get it going, never been a problem till now so must have disturbed it somehow Sad

Are there any tricks to finding intermitant wiring faults?

Rewire it all lol

or ust use a multimeter on both ends of the wire to try and check continuity.

its alot of work, and will take alot of time. good luck Thumbs Up

Use the symptoms to isolate which area of the wiring it is in.

e.g. engine works but no lights implies charging circuit is ok. Neutral switch working but no flashers would mean somewhere else etc.

If you can isolate it sufficently like that you just have to go through the connector blocks with WD40 and make sure the joints are all tight. I'd then check the relevant wires for signs of wear and melting. Frame earths next. Then test switches. Failing that it is going through the wires one at a time.

For a more general fault in the electrical side, first take all the relevant plastics/tank off so you can get at it (check the fault still exists after removing each part to eliminate trapped wires). I tend to start at the battery and work forwards looking for the 'blockage' in the circuit. You can do all this with two wires (one attached to the frame and one 'floating') and a bulb or a voltmeter.

So, battery charged, terminals tight, power getting to fuse box, power coming out of fuse box, power getting to ignition switch, power coming from ignition switch, back to fuses, back out of fuses, getting to switch, getting through switch, getting to bulb then returning to earth.

You will eventually hit a point where the power isn't getting through. The problem is between there and the point immediately before it.

With an ignition fault, I tend to work from the plug backwards (cheap ---> expensive bits).

Hurrah!

Done it! Turns out it was a frayed wire so cut it and resoldered it then shrinkwraped it, all sorted! Those circuit tester screwdriver things are great Thumbs Up

Only took a couple of days Rolling Eyes (new sexeh lights are well worth it though!)

And the only things better than sparkley things with wires and buttons are things activated by an intermittant flick switch with a red flip-up cover over it.
