Have a look on here: https://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regveh_whatmustido.htm#1

You will need the reg number though for the V62. Talk to the DVLA direct and ask them for assistance.

The form is attached for you to look at, but you will need to contact the DVLA to get registration.

Also bear in mind that you have no idea of the bikes history. It could have been a write off, stolen or still have finance owed on it, in which case you will lose the bike with no appeal. No reg, no HPI, no idea.

Point taken the bike was a bit "rose tinted" I think, would anyone know of a way to obtain the VRN from the VIN or frame number?? Another than ringing the DVLA which ill do tomorrow!

I would put money on that there is something wrong with that bike.

I bet they won't tell you the reg number from the frame number. I have tried before and they told me no.

Whats the best way of sorting this then? Does it mean a full re-register?

Pretty much what they told me (although I would give it a try with the DVLA first) was I would have to get it re-registered. If I could prove the date of manufacture they would do an age related plate, if not they would Q-plate it.

In the end I did something a wee bit illegal (although in no way immoral) which was a lot easier and which I will not go into exact details of. Let's just say it landed up with a numberplate, but not the one it was supposed to have.

Had this wih DVLA recently and you can now (in theory) get a VRN from the Chassis No. but expect a fight to get it.

Just remember that many vehicles details don't match DVLA's records which is where I had my problem and had to do something very illegal to reclaim the original VRN.

Are you able to do a HPI check with just the VIN number?

i applied to the dvla just before christmas for a registration document for a gpz500s, i gave them the frame number, the engine number and the approximate year of manufacture, sent them a cheque for £19 and four weeks later got my v5--it worked for me, just because it has no number plate or v5 doesn't necessarily mean it's dodgy

well first i rang the dvla and spoke to a nice welsh lady, she told me i needed a v62(think that's the one it's the standard form to apply for a v5) she said to fill in the form and leave out the registration number which i didn't have-she said to put in a covering letter with frame and engine number explaining how and when i purchased the bike and also to send a cheque payable for £19, she told me that it's easier for the dvla to supply the original v5 where possible than go through the hassle of a re-reg and she also told me that if the application is unsuccessful i'd have got my money back--i was lucky, i bought a N reg gpz500s with no docs for £50 and made a nice bike out of it!

If that's the case, see my post above for the V62 form. You can see then what needs to be filled in.

A bit of an update - I have rang the DVLA helpline 3 times (trying to speak to different people) basically, the DVLA helpline can't access there records without a VRN!? Devon & Cornwall Constabulary have no records of vehicles at all including stolen vehicles!? So my next line of attack is: I have wrote to my local DVLA office (Exeter) with a V62, cheque for £19, and a begging letter! Wish me luck!

The DVLA have cashed the cheque, so with any luck I may have a V5 coming through the post soon!
