So what you saying Nath? I should just try turning it over for an hour playing with the throttle and choke?

Check the slides are fully closed, when you release the throttle you should hear a satisfying 'clunk' as they hit the stopper.

If they're slightly open you won't be getting enough air through on just the starter to pull enough fuel out.

That's what I had with the MZ, had me stuck for ages.

Wet plugs sound to me like they might not be sparking, or not sparking very well, is the timing ok?

Might sound basic, but is your battery allright? As Gaz said, the plugs not sparking sounds like a pretty high possibilty...

Have you actually checked for them sparking? If you take the plugs out of the engine, place them on the side of the cylinder (Dont Just hold them, or you'll get a shock, litterally). And just turn the wheel by hand... (make sure its in gear though) and you should see them spark Thumbs Up

You said you were having problems with the ignition circuit, so i'd check that out first...

Gaz the slides are completley closing, there is that satisfying 'clunk' you mentioned.

I'm 100% percent sure the plugs are sparking, i've ripped em all out, had em connected to the HT leads, stuck em on the frame and presto they sparked. Every last one.

And with the petrol in the bores? That should tickle them into life.

Try getting some EZ start, you spray it into the air box, just more flammable than air, might coax it into life.

Oh god yeah, be warned that stuff stinks!

I thought you had to put it directly into the carbs... as in where the air filter connects to the carbs, so it goes in with the fuel...

Thats at least how we did it on the old grasser bikes

Sorry and how is that a million miles from what I said?

I did mean take the air filter out, so you're pretty much spraying it into the carbs.

Just sometimes it's awkward to get straight to the mouth of the carb.

Tried easy start stuff before, sprayed some onto my finger for shits and giggles and F**K ME! It was freezing!

Either way, gettin my carbs back tomorrow from my mate who rebuilds lamborghini engines for a power boat team out here, so they should be sorted after that.

Coupled with heatin up the sparkies in the oven i reckon she should breathe tomorrow....well later today Smile

The fact that the plugs are getting wet suggests that there's nothing wrong with the carbs. Like was said in your thread in the workshop, the ignition timing may well be cocked up, or you could have engine problems (no compression).

Sorry mate i must have mis-read your post and taken it to mean spraying it into the air box with the filter still in.

My bad mate Thumbs Up

Well yeah, I meant that, but didn't say it. Damn this internet shit not being intuitive.

My guess would be timing firstly, then probably compression. Although you've had the barrel off IIRC, and put new rings on, so I assume you checked stuff then.

I'm almost 100% sure the piston timing is right, but i don't know about the ignition timing.

As for no compression, how would that be caused? No head gasket? Cuz that's back on and it wasn't damaged when i put it back on.

The head gasket could be blowing, you could have broken some piston rings putting the cylinder block back on, you could have poor valve seating, or your valve clearances could be totally wrong.

Borrow a compression guage if you don't have one, but remember that car spark plugs are normally a larger thread size than bikes.

I'm pretty sure the head gasket's fine. The piston rings likewise cuz the block was put back on my mate who rebuilds lamborghini engines for a living...i think he knows what he's doing Laughing

The valve seating and clearances weren't messed around with at all and the engine WAS running before i took it apart.

I'll try pinch a compression gauge off my local bike garage for a day and see what's what.

You played with the cam chain didn't you?

I'd suspect ignition timing.

If you don't get the cam chain on exactly the right tooth, meaning the Inlet cam has to be in the right place, and the exhaust cam has to be in the right place, AND most likely piston 1 has to be at TDC. If you're one tooth wrong on the cam chain it won't start.

My XJ absolutely refused to start after replacing the head, one day I wandered out there, assuming my dad had been working on it the previous day, hit the button and it fired up. My dad ran out astonished.

So there's still a fair bit of black magic associated with engines.

Either way, i've given up, i'm dragging her sorry ass down to the garage tomorrow or sunday Crying or Very sad

Ok, so, don't laugh...BUT....i left one the chain guides out so it was continuously jumping in and out of time because the chain wasn't always tight. Picking the bike up from the mech tomorrow and throwin it all back together FINALLY!

So when you said "Gaz the timing IS spot on" it wasn't?

1 up to Gaz. You were lucky you didn't bend a valve or have a nasty piston/valve interface.

Glad you got it sorted.

How much has it cost you so far?

It was spot on time when i had the cam cover off!

So Gaz 0 Chris 0

In total the whole thing's probably set me back about a grand, including purchase of the bike, which isn't too bad.

Michael, i can guarantee that'll be the last time i have a head off a bike for while Laughing

Didn't you notice how loose the cam chain was? Confused

Numerous people mentioned the valve timing, if you'd have checked it you would have noticed the slack camchain. Moral of the story: Recognise sound advice when you see it, and act on it.

If it'd fired up you could have done some serious engine damage, like Gaz said.

That's the curious thing, i didn't notice the cam chain was slack at all because i took the cam cover off and wiggled the chain marginally to check the slack and it was fine there wasn't much at all.

My dad came home and pressed down on it hard with his thumb and it collapsed, turned the engine over for a second and it was tight again Confused

Either way i'll be sure to listen next time i ask for advice
