Alright people,
I need to use my NSR every day, about 30 miles a day if I just use it for essential trips. When I get home from college there's about an hour of daylight left, so I can get maybe one job done on it a night.

If I was to put my derestricted exhaust on the bike tonight, and then upjet it tomorrow afternoon, would I do any serious damage to it? It'd do about 30 miles before I got the new jets in it. I think it'd be alright, but if 30 miles is enough to sieze it, I'll have to wait until the weekend when I've got a whole day to see what I'm doing.

Thanks in advance,
Jon

I'd advise doing it all at once, but if doing one at a time do the jetting 1st.

Or work quickly Very Happy

i dont think it will take that long to do the exhaust restriction, the longest one will be the airbox plate, if you havent done that yet then just up jet it when you do.

You don't need to upjet. I rode my NSR for 6000 miles without upjetting, so I don't think 30 will make any difference. Alain swears that upjetting is neccessary, but I never had a single engine problem. I've only just upjetted, and for no other reason than to see if it will pull any better in top at 8000rpm+ yet to be tested!

No problems yet... the airbox was already done, and the exhaust is now, too. Thing seems to be running RICH rather than lean Shocked Checked my sparkplug, and it was very black... if they run lean they're more white... right?

Cheers,
Jon

If it's black, it might have too much oil in it. If it's carbon black, then yes, it is too rich.

It's oily black, it hasn't been cleaned for AGES though. It had been getting harder and harder to start for a few weeks, until eventually it wouldn't go at all until I took it out and gave it a wipe. I've now replaced the plug Thumbs Up

Just keep monitoring it. If it goes oily again check your oil delivery system.

Right, this is wierd...

The bike is now fully derestricted (but not yet upjetted), but it still only manages about 75mph on the flat Confused It used to do about 60-65. It also accelarates a LOT harder than it used to.

Surely 75 isn't right? Will upjetting give me any more speed? It's UK spec, too, so there shouldn't be any other restrictions lurking apart from the undersized sprocket (which wouldn't be that restrictive, surely?)

Cheers,
Jon

11,000 in 4th, about 10,000 in 5th, and 8,000 in 6th Confused I don't know why it won't rev higher in the top gears, it's just flat... can't really use 6th on a straight road only downhill. Sprockets are standard size.

Thats exactly what mine is like and its completely standard- does about 75, maybe 80 with a long enough straight. It'll get to 75 in fifth alright but change into 6th and its only just in the powerband so even a small incline and i have to change down. I'm taking all the restrictions and upjetting this weekend hopefully, i'll let you know what happens.

I'll probably get moaned at for this but when i had my NSR i never bothered rejetting it after fitting an Arrows system. The mixture was probably out but it didn't seem to do the bike any harm, in fact i did about 10k on it without any problems so i'd say you'd be fine with 30 miles.

What i wouldn't do is change the air fiter without jetting. Zimma, a lad who used to come on here changed his and within 10 miles the thing seized up. Shocked

Ohhh, why is it sooo slow? It's fully derezzed and I get about 80 on the flat. There must be something else holding it back, but what??

Damn thing..

my nsr is restricted still. it does 80 pretty quick once the revs kick in. but i do have the same problem with 6th. my bike is the 02 model. and i will rejet once i derestrict jsut to be safe of any problems as i havent enough money to risk the pistons, or rings or anything screwing up.
