Hi there, as you can see i'm new to the forum!

I am 16 (17 in April) and currently own a Gilera Stalker 50cc. I am looking to sell this and upgrade to a 125cc for my commute to school. I was wondering if some people could tell me a few things about riding a motorbike, and how big a change it is from a moped. All i seem to hear about is how everyone crashes etc......I'm the only one in my school who hasn't crashed my moped (derestricted - 55mph tops on flat)!

I'll be honest, i would much rather have a car for safety reasons but as i don't have mummy and daddys wallet in easy grasp this is not possible....

1) How much could i pick up a >2000 NSR125 for?
2) How much would it be to insure this on a provisional (will get an A2 eventually..within the year)
3) What sort of protective clothing should i be wearing....i don't like the idea of full leathers because of the hassle of getting in and out of them!
4) They say everyone crashes...have you???
5) I want something reliable and i want to be riding LEGALLY, any suggestions (if its not the NSR)

Cheers for your help guys and i eagerly await your replies!

By the time you've got all your gear and insurance and bike you could be sorted with a car.

You cant ride a deresticted NSR legally Smile

1) NSR's usually £1250+
2) Would say about £400
3) Textile jacket and helmet/gloves are minimum IMO
4) Yes
5) For 1, your not riding your moped legally. And if your thinking about keeping a NSR restricted, may as well go for a 4 stroke 125cc bike like a CG125. These will do roughly the same as a restricted NSR (70mph?) Derestricted NSR's usually 90-95mph.

Around 1700 I think.

The ultimate question, differs from person to person but it won't be cheap.

Don't ride a bike then, I'll piss you off.

Yes, most people do crash, most people don't get seriously injured though.

CG125, GN125, GZ125, all 4 stroke bikes will be much cheaper to run than a 2 stroke if you're going to give it good quality oil etc.

Hey there, first off welcome to the forum,

second i have an NSR so i can help you out a bit, so heres the answers to your questions.

1) From about £1500+ (my 2002 cost £2100)
2) Probably about 800 Third Party Fire and Theft
3)I have got a 2 piece set of leathers so you can just wear the jackets, they offer the best protection aswell
4)I have aswell but not the NSR (on my suzuki GS 125) just take it slow and get used to it first, you'll be alright
5)Go for the NSR 14bhp legal, can be derestricted quite easily to get power to about 26-28bhp quite nippy after being derestricted.

Hope this answers your questions

Where abouts are you in the UK?

Chances are that you'll come off eventually... even if it's not your fault, some blind cager will eventually cross your path, and then... erm - bang. It's not nice, but that's the way things go...

Well done on keeping the moped right side up for a year, you're one of only two people I know who've managed it. I crashed my 'ped 3 times, but then, thinking back, I did ride it a bit "hard" for what it was.. stupid really.

1) my 2002 NSr125R1 is for sale at £1600
2) dont know depends on you, best off ringing up insurance companies and asking them for quotes, if you have been riding your 50 for a year then you should have a No claims bonus, this will help reduce your premium cost.
3)jacket, waterproof and armoured is advised, as our gloves even if theyr just chepa leather ones, you need ot have your skin covered, ride in jeans and a good bear of boots, lid is obvious.
you need also to consider waterproof trousers (£10 max) if riding in all weathers as only mode of transport?
4) yes, it hurts make sure you have all of the above on. Car pulled out on me nothing I could do about it except customise its bonnet
5)NSr was perfectly reliable for me, took it all over the place, occasioanlly flowled the spark plug, so always carried a spare.

Yes but if i take my A2 test then i can ride a 125 de-restricted right?

I am based in Luton (very, very, unfortunatly)! I have to take the 5ish mile journey to school every day and a car would just get stuck in all the traffic. Also i've ofudn the running costs of a motorbike are much less than a car would be!

I've had my close calls but i tend to only take risks (ie overtake cars) if i'm sure i'll get away with it.

Can i just thank everyone who's replied the information has been priceless for me and please keep the replies coming in!

yes to the above, or anyother bike as long as it's 33bhp, which can be in the form or a restrictor kit or the bike standard power.

not all bikes are cheaper to run than a car,
I found the NSR was costing me £12 a week in 2stroke oil alone during summer months as I was going college and back (13mile a day)and then for a play at weekends of 250ish miles.

That is a lot for oil alone....but 250miles a weekend!!

Cars you have the £40 a week petrol.

The price of an NSR125 is the price of a crappy old banger. For a 17 year old car insurance is going to be at least £1200.

Then you have to pay tax of £100 a year on top of the yearly insurance cost. With a 125 i can consider taking it to university as well.....

I know on the insurance side it can be 'spensive for cars
for me to insure my 27 year old austin allegro the quote was £1800, im insured on my GPZ500s TPFT for £760 with 3 claims.

NSRs are damn nice to look at, dont handle as well as other 125's but still good enough.

I like my mileage, did 23000miles on my varadero 125, 450 in a day once Shocked sorta got carried away, was soo good on fuel though, have you thought about one of those?

honda XL125V varadero, can get those for NSR money, look alot bigger than a 125, top speed of 70 which is no high speed, but plenty of go, and learner legal.

My 19 year old workmate paid £2000 for a Fiat Punto last year for insurance. I was 24 when I insured the NSR, and it cost me a little less than £400 TPF&T.

You also have to take servicing costs into account with bikes. They take more looking after than cars do. You might want a basic set of tools for a start, so you can do the regular work yourself.

But the upside, £15 tax a year Thumbs Up You do get through 2-stroke oil but 1 litre would usually last me about a month, ~£8 for TTS. I was roughly spending £1 a day on petrol.

You wont go too far wrong with an NSR, and you can derestrict it if you pass your A2 test, just as i will when i do mine.

Best of luck

There is a power to weight ratio that must be adhered to if you're going by the book.

I know that an RS125 is illegal to derestrict on an A2 because it has too much power for the weight. I'm unsure if this applies to the NSR or not - you'll have to find out the legal power to weight ratio limit and then find out an NSR's power and weight to see if it abides.

The RS is not illegal to ride on restricted licence if you consider the wet weight of the bike and the true power output. Most people think the RS gives 33bhp derestricted, but it's more likely to be somewhere between 28-30bhp. With a rideable weight much higher than the quoted 115kg, it shouldn't have a power-to-weight exceeding the limit.

Stotty, If you get a ridiculous quote on your insurance ( check now if u ant done so ) then do your A2 test as soon as your 17, I can ride a ZXR400 for £742 or I could not bother with an A2 license and ride an NSR125 for £1,300 ish.

Also I wear Draggin jeans, they got kevalar in them and can withstand 100mph slides apparntly.

Also I dont really see motorbikes as that dangerous compared to cars, you learn to look out for yourself alot more on a bike than in a car, only problem is your less hard to see but so long as you dont be a dick then it hopefully wont hurt that much Mr. Green

Oh yea and I've been riding a moped for a year now and I ant come off... yet....

Sounds like you're a lot like me! Having my 'ped for a year has lead me to believe they're not as dangerous as they seem. As long as you keep your eyes out for hazards you should be fine. With a ped i find it is very easy to dodge and move out of the way quickly!

On that advice i think i'm going to give an insurance comapany a call.....can anyone recommend any?

Also does £800 for an '05 reg Gilera Stalker sound like a good deal? Never crashed althogh has a delay....top end of 55mph (bloody good for an air cooled) makes up for it though!
