Well, I just thought I would start by introducing myself...I'm Jay, I'm 16 and I currently ride a Peugeot XR6.
I'm 17 in July and was just thinking about my situation. Should I get a cheap 125, learn on it for a few months then do my test? Or do you think I should have a few lessons as soon as I'm 17 and go straight for my test so I can get a 400/600 restricted? Are there any other options open to me?
What did you do when you took your A2 restricted licence Question
Thanks, Jay

Welcome to the forum!

A lot has changed since I was 17....which was 17 years ago! So I cannot comment on the tests, however I would say that you are probably best doing some time on a geared 125 bike and getting used to the controls and how it rides etc, the insurance will not be such a hit either.

Once you have done a year (or whatever time you feel confident) then look at doing your test. It's all about getting experience under your belt.

From what I can remember, I rode a 50cc from 16 to 17 and then a 125 from 17 to 18, I passed my test then and got a 250, I could have rode any size bike (the tests were different back then) but could not afford the insurance to start with.

Cheers

Cheers for the reply! My bike is geared so I'm fine with clutch controll etc.

If you're confident at handling the bike, gears etc, then it may be worth going for your restricted test.

Just be careful of the power at first (huge compared to a 50), and the extra weight of the bike when at low speeds. Its much easier to drop a bigger bike when doing simple stuff like wheeling it around.

Just have a couple of lessons so you know what the examiner is looking for and get on with the test. If your instructor thinks you're not ready for the test he'll let you know.
