Clunky gears

I've noticed that the lower gears 1st,2nd,3rd are a little bit clunky/grabby especially when cold which to a point is understandable on start up as the oil is thicker. But to a lesser extent they are still noticabley notchy when it's upto temp, whereas 4 through 6 are smooth as silk.

I've checked the clutch adjustment and it's pretty much spot on so is this just the nature of the beast or a sign of impending doom ?

Change your oil and filter

Its freaky how much difference it makes.. (i'll change mine when gears get harder to select, not by millage, its an indication the oil isn't lubuicateing as well as when it first went in)

I agree with mrz the same thing happened to my bike I changed the oil and it was great. If it's anything else either take it apart and see or take to a garage and get them to. If the bike is old or has covered alot of miles the gear box might be worn down (1st 2nd and 3rd are the most used)

Things have improved since the oil change so you guys were on the money although I had already done it so I didn't think it would have sorted anything. Now only first gear clunks when its cold and then it's only the very first time you engage it to set off after starting it up.

I can only assume the plates were sticking a bit making the clutch drag, and the oil change plus using it everyday has freed it up. The guy I bought it off had it laid up for a while before he sold it which probably hasn't helped.

The only thing I'm now occasionally having trouble with is it drops out of 5th into 4th for no apparent reason and normally when I'm giving it some beans, which is useful, NOT !! It may just be me not putting it into gear properly, but one to keep an eye on before I throw a Piston !

Pretty much settled into it now already, almost like I'd never had a break from bikes at all. The biggest thing I've noticed is being older I can actually afford to get the right gear instead of freezing my nuts off when I was a yoof because I couldn't afford to put petrol in my ped let alone by a decent jacket. Also nice to be able to overtake stuff instead of being stuck in a car.
I'm really looking forward to the summer and getting out on some decent runs instead of the daily treck into work, although even that's an adventure at the minute .

Aren't Kawasaki's notorious for 'clunking' onto 1st gear?

I know my ER5 did it and there was no problems with the gear box on that bike. Had the same on my training bikes.

Call it a 'quirk'.
