I've been looking for a new project, and came across a cheap '89 GS500E, which I went and saw on the weekend. The bike itself had been around the clock, but had a replacement engine fitted 10,000 kms ago, and seemed to run pretty sweetly.

The seller only wanted around 350 quid for it so I made an offer which he accepted. Since then I've had the thing in pieces, checking everything over and tightening everything up.

So far the bike has been given an oil change, new oil filter, new air filter, new spark plugs, and a general tidy up. I've also fixed the rev counter and replaced the left front indicator, both of which weren't going. The chain has been adjusted, although it really could do with a new chain and sprocket set in the near future.

The bike should be in a position to pass an MOT, although I am going to keep it off the road for the next few months and do it up good and proper. Once everything else is done I'll give it a new paint job to finish it off, then bring it back on the road and sell the GN.

Last night I had the joy of putting everything back together, and going for a spin, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Getting on a bike is great anytime, but when you've been working on that bike for a few days, and you finally get to 'test it out' it feels even better.

Will keep you all updated on my progress. For the moment, here is a before pic, taken a few minutes after I got the bike home.

Do you have actual plans for the bike or are you just looking for something to play with and tidy up?

Hi Oni,

Once I've finished restoring it I plan to use it to replace the GN250 as my daily commuter. The extra capacity will also allow for the odd bit of weekend touring as well.
